Fun Cat or what ????
4 Attachment(s)
Can someone tell me what this boat is? Some say Vengence Fun Cat till they look at the transom. It has a completly extended or notched or something weird going on with little fixed tabs. There is no parting seam across the transom, like its added on or something.Nobody near me has a clue and there is no name on the boat. It is an 1985 as per the metal plate glued to the inside of the well. this plate also says its NJ Safety Certified and has a HULL Number stamped into it. It has a 75 HP Suzuki on it so it must move pretty good for a little boat.
Thanks Anthony |
Fun cats have steps. Can't see them in pic. Are they there?
Dash or cockpit pics would help. |

Fun Cats were built in NJ. The ferring looks right but but the deck looks a little off to me. It might be the black paint on the sponsons. I'm looking for pics of mine to compare but I'd say there is a good chance it's a Fun Cat. I sold mine to with a Johnson v4 90/115. It's on lake Hopatcong.
I still want that 16 Fiotch you looked at for me up there Anthony. Wonder what happend to that. |

Anyone else have any info? Its registered thru NJ as a homebuilt, I know it started out as a fun cat. I found many pictures on other site of the construction of the fun cats and it matches this one perfectly. Just dont know why this transom is different.

Back up an take a picture so we can see more of the boat. Hard to tell with bits an piecs.:angry-smiley-038:

Looks like someone added a foot and more negative trim to that boat.
The HIN plate you have there it appears to be a home made State of NJ issued . They must have lost the title and went to the state for a new title and assigned HIN. BTW, a link you may be interested in: http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/sportboat_spring_2012 :drink: . |
Dude that is awesome, thanks for posting. Now I need to find a copy of that issue.

funcat
What is the overall length? If it is 14ft not 13ft there was a guy named Vanray who owned it. He did the work himself Larry told him not to do it.

I suspect it might be Vanray's old boat as well...
That guy had all sorts of ideas for a boat.... |

IMHO, I think he was part of the reason the mini boat races we used to run fell apart. He wanted to run a MODIFIED Mini Class . He wanted to be able to run 1/2 V6 Mercs on the boats. Yeah, a V6 running on 3 cyls. That was the type of thoughts he had going through his head. We barely had enough boats at the time to keep the races going and then he wanted to divide the classes up even more. Sound familiar ? Offshore as we know it.... :drink: He may have even dropped the tunnel on that boat Anthony for more compression ? He was talking back then (late 1980's) about an anti blow over wing design. Funny now that I think about it, that is what was put on the Phenomenon : So, I will give him credit there on the wing. They also run them on the hydros... http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/im...97193082-4.jpg |

the boat FUNCAT FEVER I owned for like 10 years and sold it to a guy in Lake Hoppy that restored it.. |
funcat
I owned 1 of 2 B72's built for 20yrs. Have not seen Vanray since we stopped racing them long time ago. Plain and simple he thought he could get more speed out of it so he could win races. It did't work think it was slower. I can tell you this on a 13' original boat tunnel does not start working well til 70 mph. Did not see that with a 75 stinger had to put a 135 crossflow. Biggest hp i put on it was 235 crossflow.

What's up Billy ? :drink:

Has anyone ever seen a Kar-Marine cat? I really like the size (18' or so) and the freeboard. I'd be really interested in something similar state-side. I just wish there was a manufacturer of a cat this side with a good tall tunnel that could handle some 2'-3' chop!

A 13' hull that doesn't work well until it's above 70 MPH or has a 235 HP engine screwed to the transom?
The Fun Cat was an exact scaled down version of the 30 ft Shadow. Therefore is ran the same way. The boats always had a hop in them until you reached a certain speed. Once over that speed the tunnel begins to start working. Hop goes away and you now are running on a cushion of air and dancing on two pads.... Billy has the most R&D hours and HP ever put on a Fun Cat to my knowledge. Here is a shot of Billy running behind me and my Bullet 130 but I will be the 1st to admit, alot of times that was not always the case... Great times back then ! :drink: http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/im...p606705326.jpg |
That's cool looking little cat. Wow they where catching some crazy air for a small boat in those youtube videos
|
So when you come back up to the house ill jump in the Fun Cat and you can run the Cougar cub and we can tear up this lake....Maybe we can go do some laps during the Greenwood Lake Race..

One of my old funcats was bought by a person named Hugh, he did a complete top notch restoration, no not a top notch, an over the top amazing restoration. He now has my brother Philip's 21 Superboat. Hugh told philip he knows someone with a set of molds had he is just itching to build some Fun Cats. Last I spoke to Larry he also told me he would build a few if he got a minimum of three.
Tim, do you have pictures back from that series we raced in jersey with the was it flat bottom club? I would love to see them. I guess that 28Skater 300X Must be Billy Butterfield, hi Billy. Michael Filippone |
The 13' Biel like mine will be built again in the not so distant future with some nice refinements. You wont find a small boat that will run better or handle big power like these. Mine runs mid 80's with a stock 130. There is another with a 225X running close to 100mph and another that is about to get a 300 drag bolted to the transom.
