Default Merc Water Pumps

I have a '97 454 MAG with 340 hrs. This is my second season I have owned it. The water pump has been replaced twice and is now leaking again.

Anybody else have the same problem?

Are you talking about the sea water pump or the circulating pump on the engine?

Do you have the low water pick up on the Bravo drive. If so what is your water pressure at WOT?

The Merc water pumps are pretty lousy, especially if you run in salt water. I replaced 2 in three seasons. The machanic at my marina sends them back in bulk to merc. Said he replaced two motors last season under warranty because the pumpes started spraying water and the engines digested it through the intakes. You would think Merc would have this figured out by now. Go with a rebuilt pump, they seem to last a tad longer for some reason.

I went for a run yesterday. I changed my oil on Sunday so after running for about 1/2 hr. I stopped to check the oil. My top end and RPMs were down and I was wondering what's up. I was ready to blame it on my 250 lb. buddy. My float switch must be malfunctioning because when I opened my hatch, I saw A LOT of water in the bilge.

The water is leaking from the back of the pump. There is a plate on the back of the pump with a gasket that was leaking. The belts were slinging water all over. I wouldn't doubt that some of the water was going in the intake. It would be easy enough to fix myself but I am still under warranty. I'm hoping my mechanic can hook me up by the weekend.
