"7" 557 Horsepower outboard...

My boating buddy and I were talking about this today in a discussion of I/O's vs Outboards and we asked ourselves.." Has anyone actually these Outboards on a boat running?"

i saw these at the Miami Show last year and thought it was a terrific idea...but can't say that I know anyone that has seen a boat in the water running these things.

Kool idea but positioning 2 of these on a bracket/transom would make for a horrible center of gravity/ trim issues. Not all ideas are great ones.

Don't see where you're getting the facts on that. Figure on a Fountain 38CC

Triple Merc Verado 300hp --------- 900hp 1905lbs
Triple Merc Verado 350hp --------- 1050hp 2001lbs
Twin Seven Marine 557hp --------- 1114hp 2000lbs

So how does the 7 Marine have issues? Fountain runs with quads with no issues with 2668lbs hanging off the transom. So in the trip vs twin setup which would be better? Plus the 7's has one less gear case dragging through the water also take into account the torque ratting of 1100 ft lbs, no way 3 mercs would come close to that

People say they same thing about my boat with the twin diesels, but the weight is very close to trip 300's and forward of the transom and lower so if anything its better. The pair of 7 marine's should be better than trips since you are dragging one less gearcase. I talked with one of the engineers from 7 marine at the Ft Lauderdale show and he said they weren't getting the results they expected and were still working on the setup. I think the problem is they are using an intrepid as a test boat, they need to try them on something that performs better like a Nortech.

Awesome engines, I just wish the guy in the video would shut up and let us hear them run!

run two of thoseon a 30 motion cat....or maybe a skater.....that would be sick. i love outboard cats.

i wanna see 4 of these big boys on big cat hull. i saw a 38 midnight express cat that had quad 300s , 2 on each sponson. didnt get to se it run but it looked badass.

This fishing catamaran looks pretty sweet with quad 300s out back.. two per sponson.

That's what I thought...nobody has seen these things on a boat ..in person...running...isn't this a bit weird?

Twin O/B Sonic 02-11-2012 04:44 AM

I saw them in Miami too and talked to the builders. Very impressive pieces and people. We did the math as well and I think for their intended market/application (replacing triple and quads on large fische botes) they would work.
Taking it from chalk board to field can be a challenge though.
We voiced our concern over the lower units holding up to that torque to which they assured us they had addressed and sounded as they had.
I too have been waiting to here some real world feedback.
Similar to when Yamaha came out w/their 250 HO, 4 stroke O/B. Was supposed to be the 2nd coming and now some two + yrs after the fact I'm just starting to see that feedback. From one guy!

Being an O/B guy all my life I cannot get over the loading of the transoms on these boats. We see quad four strokes every time we're in the Keys. That's 3200+ lbs!
Yikes. :helmet:
