Seaside NJ Race this Sunday
Hello Race Fans,
In only four short days the NJ Offshore Racing Association in conjunction with OPA will bring racing to the shores off Seaside Heights NJ for the first time ever. Since Seaside is a full 10 miles away from the nearest inlet, it has never been viewed as a viable place to run an offshore boat race. The reason that this race has been moved from the bay to the ocean is twofold. First, the bay was deemed to be too shallow to run a safe race. With an average depth of only 4 feet, should one of the canopied catamarans roll over, their canopy hatches would be stuck in the mud and the dive teams would not be able to extract the crew members safely. Secondly, we received the needed sponsorship money to run the race from the fine folks at Casino Pier, who will serve as the title sponsor for this event. Other contributing
sponsors are Budweiser, The Aztec, The Atlantic Bar and Grill and the town of Seaside Heights NJ.
If you are volunteering your boat and time for this race, you'll need to attend the Captains meeting at 6pm this Saturday night at the Aztec bar on the Seaside Boardwalk. The Aztec is on the north side of Casino Pier. The party will follow immediately thereafter at 7pm. At the meeting you will receive your race day assignment, flag to display to get on the racecourse, two race T-shirts and two tickets for the party. Please remember that the
parking is horrible in Seaside on a Saturday nights, so plan on getting there early and paying a few bucks to park. This is a mandatory meeting and each boat must have at least on person present to represent the vessel.
During the day on Saturday the race boats will be in the dry pits. The dry pits will be staged in the street adjacent to Waterworks. If you know Seaside, then you know that this is the main entrance to the boardwalk area. The street will be closed from 7am to 7pm so we can use it for the boats to be placed on display, in an effort to increase local awareness of the following days race and to give race fans the chance to get up close and
personal with the men and their machines. Unfortunately, we can't use it to park for the meeting, as the road must re-open at 7pm.
On Sunday morning all of the volunteer boats will need to leave the dock a little earlier than normal as the ride to Seaside can take up to an hour depending on the sea conditions. Extra time will also be needed to chase fishing boats off the racecourse. Since the Fluke fishing has been excellent recently and this is supposed to be a beautiful weekend we may have our hands full just clearing the racecourse so please plan on getting an early
start. While the volunteer boats are clearing the course, the race boats will be getting ready at the Manasquan River Club near the end of the Manasquan River. The pace boats and police escort will leave the wet pits with the boats in tow at exactly noon. The fleet will idle all the way up the river to the ocean, which should take about 30 minutes with the tide at our back. Since this has not been promoted, as a Point Pleasant race the Coast Guard will not be closing the Manasquan inlet so the race boat fleet
must navigate the inlet off plane as any other Sunday boater. Once in the ocean the boats will break into two separate mills in front of Jenkinsons. The lead pace boat will light the smoke flare and a minute later we will launch the first start, then as soon as the first pack has been given the green flag, the second mill will come down the chute to make their start. The expected start time off Point Pleasant is 12:45. The boats will then race the ten miles south along the beach until they enter the racecourse that will be set up between the MTV Beach House and FunTown Pier. The boats should arrive in Seaside by 1pm as advertised on the local radio stations. This will be a very short two-mile oval course just outside of Casino Pier. If you want to watch from shore, you won't need binoculars to see the boats racing past the surf line. Just pick a spot along the beach and enjoy the race. Should you want to watch the race by boat, the spectator viewing area
will be at the southern end of the racecourse. Please follow the
instructions given to you by the volunteer boats as to where they want you to anchor. The turn 4 boat, (North East turn) will serve as the Finish line and give the checkered flags to the winners. Afterwards the awards ceremony will take place back at the Aztec at 6pm.
The folks at MTV have expressed an interest in covering this event for one of their shows called "Rev it up". They may be placing cameras on the turn boats, pace boats and race boats. There may also be some coverage during MTV 's regular 1pm live shows from the Beach House. None of this is definite until it happens. Stay tuned.
So slap on some sunscreen, and come on down to Seaside Heights for a great day of racing with NJ Offshore and OPA!
