need registration help in ny
I purchased a 1978 challenger/superboat that was last registered in New Hampshire in 2008. I only got a bill of sale with the purchase and was told by scpd that was all i needed to register in ny. Dmv is telling me otherwise. Previous owner is un cooperative in trying to get a new one for me. Anyone have experience with this or any ideas?

in ky where a title in order to use a bill of sale here you have to have the registration card and the bill of sale signed and notarized i once got a boat that changed hand 5 times before me and of course no registration card i had to get a affidavit and send to the last known registered owner to get it signed and notarized that way i cold get a title.. took a long time for him to send it back to me.. shoulld have taken care of it myself :evilb: if you can prove you owned it for 5 years they will issue you a new title here.. if you have a bill of sale id get some one in another bill of sale state to register it a then sign it to you.. with a reg card.... that was my second option prolly should have went that way to begin with either way it take lil time.. jst my experience i feel for you been there do it.. |
What is motor vehicle exactly telling you?
|
NY you need a bill of sale period. Second if New Hampshire required a title then NY is going to want to see a title in order to transfer it. I ran into this problem with a boat trailer from IL. Old owners never titled or registered the trailer because the trailer was never used because boat was at a cottage. Owners and broker played games for a while on it and they wanted me to do a home made trailer registration. Got to the point where I said two options give me a title or take your trailer back and give me 3 grand to find a trailer.
What is the dmv telling you? Im guessing they want to see a title, but I bet the old owner never titled it. This can be challenging as the old owner might have troubles getting paperwork to title it himself. |
Drive to NH, they will print you a title on the spot. In fact they will print a title for any registration for any rec vehicle from any state, on the spot. NH is the dmv loophole we use in NY for paperowork problems :)

In NY I believe you NEED the title, if you have the cooperation of the previous owner you may want to contact http://www.broadwaytitle.com/ they are great with classic cars, and know the system pretty well.

Nope, NH will transer with just a bill of sale on rec vehicles, they consider boats rec vehicles.
NY is retarded at the DMV they have a paper form to every process they do. When I lived in MI 95% of the time you go to counter with ID and tell them what you want and they do it. NY is by far the worst state I have had to deal with as far as DMV's go. |
when you do finally get the reg in NY make sure you get a transferable reg then no title is needed when you resell.
to register in ny you need a bill of sale so they can collect their tax and a title or a tranferable reg. |

Here is what you need to prove ownership in NY and get a title
http://www.dmv.ny.gov/proove.htm From that link, for boats Motorized boats - model year 1986 or older, or any NYS-registered boat that is less than 14 ft. long The acceptable proof of ownership is a bill of sale and a transferable NYS registration. The word "transferable" must appear on the front of the registration. The person whose name appears on the registration must sign the transfer section of the registration. If the boat is registered in another state, contact that state to make sure that the proof of ownership you receive is the acceptable proof of ownership for that state. |

Minus checked a link I would go as far as this with NY. If you buy anything out of state, go into a DMV personally and ask I am buying x from state y, what do you need. This will save all the hassle. But in NY a good rule of thumb is if you leave that buyer wherever he might live without a bill sale or a tittle or transferable reg that says exactly that you will be in trouble. Bills of sale are easily forged(did I say that) but the other two are somewhat hard to create. |

I guess thats a nice out to know of thanks. Although I dont understand how the bill of sale only establishes ownership to begin with. But I guess they can take the name of off the bill of sale and cross reference.

Just register it in NH for a year.

with a bill of sale in nh you can reg any boat .and when you sell it hand over the reg to the new owner .with that he can go to ny or his state and reg and they will issue a title from that .ive done it many times

That maine trick is the hot set up. I want to do mine this year, is there a website you use or did you drive to Maine?
I used these guys and got the new plate and reg in about 10 business days. If you already have a trailer just send them the registration, even if you have a title just keep it titled in NY and register it in maine. My boat trailer is 45 a year in Ny plus the inspection. In maine the trailer is 5 years for 90 bucks plus no hassle of the inspection. |

replies to need help with reg in ny
thanks for all the advice, for some reason I got all the posts at once just now. I'll give an update, previous owner swears he'll get me the reg even if he has to drive to nh dmv to get it himself, however this was promised for a month now. My local police told me It's not stolen and I only need a bill of sale to register but nys dmv says I need the registration to prove ownership. I called nh dmv and they wont give me any info on the boat or previous owner because of privacy issues. After hours on the nys dmv website there is a way for me to register it (i think) if I tell them that I lost the registration and provide them with 1 bill of sale, 2 statement from police officer saying its not stolen 3 a trsacing of the hull id # and 4 notorize the bill of sale. At that time they will issue me a non transferable registration to me and send it to a review panel to decide if I can get a transferable one. This is the route i'll probably take if the old owner won't come through or i'll just try to sell it and get some of my money back being sure to let the new owner of the issues! Thanks again and I'll keep updating any progress.

you were right
still waiting from previous owner and dmv. I had to send out certified letters to previous owner and pray he didn't respond to them, this way I can take them to dmv along with other info and hopefully get a new reg. For anyone else with a similar issue, its way easier to take the drive and get one on the spot which I may end up doing anyway. The only good part about this is its given me time to redo the interior and set it up nicely. Thanks for all the help
