Crazy stuff. Those guys definitely have my respect (even though they're sailors, LOL). There's a guy I know from my marina that I chat with occasionally who's on one of those rigs. It's nonstop for days and weeks on end, and brutal on the body; their endurance and stamina is second to none.

That's tough stuff. Got to have respect for guys who tough that out for 4-6wks at a time. One guy in the video mentions 18kn while they are dealing with issues. I've heard 20-22 top speed. That's crazy

Yep, a brutal race. They lose boats in the storms all the time. I think it was this race last year that a boat lost it's mast in a storm, went over and lost I think 3 of the crew.
Saw footage from a Coast Guard chopper hovering over the over turned hull, the day after in the calm.
Was very eerie.
I sailed quite a bit w/the old man growing up. Way different being out in it knowing you don't have a bunch of power in the bilge to out run a storm if you need to.

I can't remember all the specifics, but a few years ago they had a stop in Boston. I somehow snagged free Grey Goose tickets, so perhaps that would explain my vague memory. What I can tell you is the money in that series is like F-1. It's a big deal in Europe. The pits set up in Boston were amazing. Each team had several box trailers. One trailer was a complete machine shop inside while the others were parts. The sponsors like Volvo had entire buildings erected. Now here is the best part. The race boats of course are faster than the cargo ships carrying the parts and manufacturers displays. So, they have to have two complete set ups. One in port where they are and one on the water going to the next stop.

Man, that is really offshore. Those dudes gotta be some tough cookies.

I spent some time with Dean from TAOD last year at Flight Club Skaterfest. He did the graphics work on the Puma boat- very impressive, as usual. Those boats look massive when they are out of the water.

Watch the behind the scenes coverage of the Americas Cup. They tow the boats to the races w/the hulls covered so the other teams can't see them.
When they leave them at dock, over night before races they drop partitions in the water around the hull for secrecy and/or higher divers to guard them.
True story.
It's as a bad as F-1 car racing.

I think the rich race open class Offshore power boats. I think the Uber rich race sail botes :lolhit:

Its not uncommon for diver with rebreathers to be used to spy on other teams. I remember seeing a clip of a team going after a guy in the water back in the 80's. Shortly after winged keels showed up.
