Is it OK if I share a photo on your thread? I was flipping through a 1964 "National Boat Racing Yearbook" last week and saw this picture. The Miami Marine Stadium at the beginning of it's life! Again, if this thread is just for your photos let me know.

Tim!

Thanks for posting those shoots of the old Miami Marine Stadium, they were some really nice shoots and you gave us a good look at a part of Marine History. I was wondering if it is structurally sound still and if the trees and shrubs were cleaned up and the seats cleaned and painted could it be used again?

I remember reading in powerboat mag that this was coming back to life. Anyone else recall this?

Isn't supposed to be restored soon?

It looks like it mainly needs a lot of sandblasting and paint!!

Some of that tagging work is better than some of the "boat paint jobs" that I have seen over the years...

I've actually raced boats there. Just not power boats! Back in the mid to late 70's (an interesting time for Miami on several fronts) rowing was a very popular sport in Miami, primarily due to the large Cuban presence in the area. Rowing actually had a large collegiate presence in Florida at the time and was one of few geographical areas that could challenge the dominate Northeastern schools. I was in school at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne during that period and on the schools rowing team. We raced for several years in the Miami Marine Stadium even though we only had about 1500 meters of water there (a standard race format was 2000 meters). Miami races were later moved to the ICW up around the Fontainbleu Hotel area for this reason. Racing in the stadium was great though and the Cuban rowing clubs really knew how to put on a first class event. I was very fortunate to be a part of that. I will try to dig up some pictures from those races and of the stadium back then.

Dan
