I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I've seen the best teams on the circuit go forever without a sponsor, and I've seen the worst teams on the circuit get major sponsors. It's a crap shoot. You have to market yourself, and then, it is still a crap shoot. If you are really serious, I'd get in touch with Michelle-May Schmidt. She does this for a living, and she is very good at what she does. She is also very intelligent and a pleasure to deal with.
My $.02 for whatever it is worth.

Jennifer is right it is a crap shoot...I've seen several marketing packages go out with little or no response...If you are looking for a sponsor do your homework, find out everything you can about the company, what they do and who they do business with make sure you both have the same demographics and marketing plan...From what I hear Michele is a great place to start...Good luck...Also look for a post by Mike @ Adrenaline, they were looking to sponsor a Factory boat...

We have not found it all that difficult as we have a full list of series sponsors and had a team race the entire year last year on sponsorships alone. This is certainly an off year, but if you have a unique angle (I am sure it helps that our boat is so unique looking) then most are at least receptive. It does however take a long time to bring them them on board, so do not wait to the last minute.
