Aqua Toy survives to take Unlimited

36 vessels register for Marathon Grand Prix

Two boats did not start so when the Pier 57 Fountain boat dropped out of
Sunday’s City of Marathon 2002 Super Boat Grand Prix, The Aqua Toy Store
boat came from behind to take the Superboat Unlimited class crown unopposed.

The four-engine, 5,000-horsepower beast finished in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 8
seconds, an average speed of 68.71 miles per hour.

Aqua Toy crew members said the boat topped out around 150 mph on the back
straightaway of the course off Marathon.

"If we had a better, longer course, we could bump that up, a lot more," said
team mechanic Dennis Nebus.

Of 36 boats registered in all classes for the Marathon Super Boat Grand
Prix, 10 did not start, leaving only a single boat in five different
classes.

The course, shortened to keep the boats within view of spectators, began in
gulf waters behind Faro Blanco Resort. Boats headed on a long straightaway
toward Pigeon Key before cutting left under the Seven Mile Bridge.

The course then looped around on the oceanside of the bridge before a return
pass under the bridges and skirting land until closing the circuitous route
back at Faro Blanco.

One boat, the Manufacturer 2 class Daytona Performance Marine, rolled on the
hairpin turn on the third lap.

Super Boat International president John Carbonell called the accident a
"lazy roll where they went into the corner just a bit too fast." Nobody was
hurt, he said.

The Fountain team ended up winning the class, edging out Invensys Fountain
by 26 seconds, 44:26 to 44:52 as an average speed differential of less than
one mile per hour separated the boats.

Miccosukee Indian Gaming finished third. A fourth boat in the Manufacturer 2
class, Outlaw, dropped out of the race in the sixth lap.

In other races, Zipp Express captured the Superboat Limited class with a
time of 52:45, and another The Aqua Toy Store boat took the Super Stock
class with a time of 50:36.

Pump It took the Divisional 5 class crown after its only opponent, The Boss,
dropped out in the third lap. Instigator took the Superboat Vee class after
its two opponents dropped out.

Class titles won by the only boat to start in the division included
Superboat, where Team Jaguar was unopposed; Superboat Vee Limited, going to
Don’t Blink; Manufacturer 1, won by Xtreme Racing; Divisional 3, going to
Wazzup; and Divisional 4, won by Vixen.
