v-drives were very common in offshore and inshore power boats. then they invented outdrives!!

I couldn't imagine trying to dock a 38 + foot boat with V-drives.

And forget ever backing into a slip!

As long as you have twins it's a piece of cake. A single is a different story...

I have no problem putting a 45' cruiser with inboards any where I want around the docks. It's all about using the sticks

Oh yea, duh! I never use the steering wheel when docking.

Okay, how about a single motor 28' boat with v-drive?!?

Need a transmission.

Have a boat that is much harder for the average person to dock with a single.

Less leverage to trim with cavitation plates

Inability to deal with very shallow areas

Much more drag than an arneson(except small tunnel)

I am a fan of them but I wouldn't want one in my large cat over an arneson or an outdrive. Cougar made several 20 ish cats with v-drives that I think worked well.
SkiDoc, all good points (although I would put the Arneson is in a different price class). I look at performance boats as compromises anyway. So I would think quite a few people would give up easy docking, for instance, so they could have 800 hp (or more) and not have to worry about being towed back into the dock, because their Bravo blew up.
