Most fun I have had is boating by myself..no worries about anyone falling or getting hurt. just me and the sound of the engines.
it amazes the guys at the ramp that I can launch and load my Tiger by myself as fast and as efficient than someoen with people helping. no telling people where to go and yada yada yada, lol |
Yep.
I'm 52 and in my life I've done at least as much single handing as w/a crew for all of the reasons mentioned. I enjoy both equally. With single handing I love the solitude, my schedule, my destination, my speed. When I was still in Ohio it was a 2 1/2 hr tow to the ramp on Lake Erie. Most of my friends would launch, run 3 mls to the closest island and tie up for the weekend. After the work/effort/expense of just getting to the ramp, no way I'm going 3 mls and tying up. In nasty conditions you have a much clearer conscience should you decide to risk it and or play. Also some times difficult finding groups w/similar navigating/seamanship levels in the areas I want to run. Most going back to the earlier post about drinkers Vs boaters. Did one planned group trip that I asked everyone to do their homework ahead of time and to be prepared. I led the group and we made 3 or 4 mls before stopping so some one could make a drink. Did another where we were scheduled to do the 30 ml trip from ramp to island on a Friday afternoon. (I was the only one that knew the way) My self and two other boats left as scheduled and made the trip w/zero issues. 2nd group had too much fun partying at home Friday and elected to head out Saturday morning. Our cell phones started ring Saturday a.M. asking how to get there. Was rough and coming out of the west as it normally was and as I warned them to expect. Island is 10 mls long and you could run either side but East side would give them lee from the island and give the group 10 mls of calm water. They got lost and called fro directions. Said they were fairly sure they were at correct island but not sure. I asked them which side they were on and the replied, "THE LEFT" side :helmet::cartman::thankyouthankyou: They came up the west side (left) and got the hell beat out of them. (inland boaters on Lake Erie 1st time) One of the group bumped his kill switch shutting off the motor. He immediately called a "May Day". Kinda fun doin the ramp thing solo once in a while too. While chasing gremlins in my 24' Sonic after the restoration I'd hit the ramp, leave the trailer in the water (through week, no traffic) do a blast, be back on the trailer and out in 5 mins. Solo ;) |
This puts into sharp relief the fact that in the 10 years I've owned a boat...I have only been out alone on it TWICE!
|
Love it, and for all of the reasons mentioned above.

You don't take sand to the beach!
The best way to add "scenery" to the boat is to have plenty of room to add it. |

Did a major renovation to the boat dock and this first year I have been able to put the boat on a lift. One of the things I have been looking forward to is being able to take off work on a Friday and beat the wife to the lake house solo run the boat without my passenger seat revlimeter telling me to slow down every time she hears the blower spool up.:lolhit:

I do a ton of solo boating. I work 24 on and 48 off so I'm out during the week more than the weekend. Its nearly impossible to find crew during the week. It's relaxing, no scared faces when I open it up, or get into the rough stuff. Hell if I've been up all night I put in make a short run, tie up and nap. It's the best sleep I get as nothing is more relaxing.

Passengers are weight. Weight slows me down. Nuff said.

I frequently make runs alone. I'm a licensed captain running a supply boat in the gulf. I have a work schedule of 28 days on and 14 days off. My wife is a nurse and works 3 days a week. So if I'm home and she's working and Im not tinkering with boat, I'll lower the lift and take it out. Then I text her pictures of me being on boat while shes working and that pisses her off. Lol.
I agree with others most relaxing time in the world. I've ran out and just killed engines drifting and listening to radio at which point I can polish stainless and stuff just enjoying life. |

There's no better feeling of freedom than being out on the water on your own, in command of your own boat, just you and the sea. When you just need to clear your head, there's no better prescription.

This post fits me to a t. I love the time alone with the tunes that I want to hear. No body saying to fast to loud or whatever. To Matt post #24 you have the same people I have around me. Thanks Matt for the deal on the corsa mine has been broke for a couple of seasons. Now I can run hard without nobody having any idea who it is.

Hey no problem. I hope they work well for ya! |
I agree with above, nothing is quite as enjoyable for me as being out by myself, listening to some tunes, and no one else around.

You hit the nail right on the head. I get up around 6:00AM and start washing, cleaning, and checking every single thing. She wakes up around 7:30AM and we still somehow never leave the house until 11:00. I will not ever figure this out or even try anymore. I have tried for the 9 years we've been together. I pre-pack everything the night before.

Oh yea. I love to enjoy the boat by myself. Boating is me so it is all me when I boat alone. I love to boat on full moon nights alone too. Bright night, calm water, peace and quiet with the boat, just awesome.
Boating with the family and friends is like sharing my passion but it is so rich and full by myself. |
I have done it all four ways (in boat alone with group of boats; in boat with someone in group of boats; with someone and no other boats and alone/alone) in all styles and sizes of boats and I have found the key factor is being on the water!
Alone/alone I tend to do more exploring to places I have not been, ride the tide, have more patience to see the gators and manatees in the mangroves or canals: be a tourist. I understand some of the trepidation about having a problem, but it has always seemed to have worked out. The one concern that does bother me is when out in a larger boat and have the wind kick up or wave action and no one at the dock/ramp seems to be willing to give a hand to keep from damaging my or other property! And yes it has happened! |
Luckily I've been able to go solo boating half the time, which I enjoy doing.. It's very relaxing and you can go at the pace you want to go. Hear the roar of the engine, the wind, and water. Plus I've had no problems with docking my boat by myself. I'm just not a fan having a boatful of people in my boat. Only once a year and that's all. the other half of the time is with one or two other people.

Thread back from the dead? ha
I boat solo as well. Most of my friends are boaters as well. So I go out when I want and they catch up or vise versa. I love my Fridays off, I take it out all day empty boat, just me and some beers, music anc cleaning, then maybe some partying that night with other friends doing the same. Then Saturday morning we all pick u the girls for the weekend boating. Or other days just me, like weeks days. I to love people, but it helps most have there own boats... so mine is room for just me and the girl. also RAREly, but when its just going to be and another boater, we will take one boat. and thats ok as well. for the rare time. most know how anal i am and handle ropes and things the correct way. |
