Grease or oil bath for bearings???
I have two sea-water pumps i'm going to rebuild. One is the old style that doesnt have the fuel pump...the other is the newer one with the fuel pump mounted. I have taken the old style apart so far and it needs new bearings....i have yet to take the newer style apart but from searching around they seem to all use the same bearings.
I assume the newer style uses the oil thats inside the main body for lubbing the bearings at the same time giving some lube for the fuel pump arm.
So the question is.....would it be any better to conver the old style pump to an oil bath setup? Drilling and taping some small holes for filling/draining wouldnt be a problem....just wondering if one would be better then the other?
If i was to go the oil bath route i was thinking of getting full contact seal bearings...then removing the seals and throughly cleaning all the grease out....and re-installing the seals on the outsides of the bearings that are up against the shaft seals and leaving the inner sides fo the bearings open for the oil to get in there......
Or should i just not bother and do it the way they came stock??
