Never heard of this!
So my wife and I are at Desert Storm. We launch and retrieve at a lot of different ramps, lake and ocean. My wife is in the truck waiting her turn to back in to pick up me in the boat at the Nautical Inn ramp. She is in the normal line up spot and next to go. Some guy pulls up and starts to pass her. As he gets along side he sees her looking at him like WTF? He stops and gets out and comes over to her window and says "Are you waiting to pick up a boat" She says Yea. He says, well I didn't know because your lights aren't on. She says " Never heard of that".
In 40 years of boating, I have never heard of nor seen this at any ramp in California, Arizona or Nevada. Has anyone else ever heard of turning on your truck/trailer lights to let others know your picking up a boat? Not a big deal, the guy was nice to her, just curious if this is normal at some ramps.......like ones I've never been too! |
Thats a new one to me, but I boat in TX.
|
I would think being in line with an empty trailer would be a clear enough indicator of picking up a boat
|
:lolhit:i would have said i was wating to get my burger&fries :lolhit:
|
He must hang out at the after hours rave parties with all the lights going. Never heard of that.
|
WTF?? She should have gotten out of the truck and beat the livin' $hit out of him just for being a dumb a$$!! :angry-smiley-038::bunnydance:
|

I've even launched at the nautical before and never heard of this. |
So this is getting kinda fun. CA, AZ, NV, TX, IL, OH, MI, NY. 42 states to go. Lets see if we can get all 50 states to weigh in on this. Hell, lets throw in DC and Puerto Rico.
This guy has to live somewhere! |
add WA, 41 to go.
|
That is a fishing boat thing. I think its a courtesy kind of action when its 5:30 AM and you cant tell what the hell is going on...

We dont do that in DE either. Never heard of it before.

(just moved to havasu) RD |
You can add PA and MD to the list. For that matter I always disconnect my trailer lights beofre launching as I was always told (True or not) that leaving them connected could blow the bulbs.
|
Add CT to the list... 31 to go....
|
Not in Michigan........ Empy trailer says it all :)
|
Here in Arkansas, alot of the beaters these guys use don't even have WORKING lights, so not here either!!
|
Lights
Add Minnesota to the list, never seen lights at the ramp unless its getting dark. Our lake is 50/50 performance boats and fishing boats I would say and I have never seen fishing rig with there lights on either.
|
Not in FL for sure and I've probably launched boats in 20 States and have never heard of it.
|
Not in Jersey!
He would be lucky to not be swimming with the fishes if he got out of his truck in Jersey! :party-smiley-004: |
i believe they do that in st matreen, but they are all a bunch of morons:lolhit:

What do you do if you have daytime running lights and just sitting at the ramp , is everyone just waiting on you to retrive your boat even though you dont have a trailer? do they assume that the trailer is still attached to the boat for ease of hooking up. Never heard of this before. :stooges:

"Oh no, I'm just taking my empty boat trailer for a lovely cruise today!" Maybe he's trying to start a "new thing." Also, during the day trailer lights are very difficult to see. |
I'm glad to hear so many "Not in my state" replies. My wife and I are proud of the fact that she can back a trailer better than most at pretty much any ramp. This guy did make her feel kinda stupid.....but she still got the trailer in, in one shot.......and without lights. ;)
Now for the comment about "Her" headlights being on, I think you got it! They usually are on. I'll do the math on the state check-in's later, gotta go to work. |

never ever heard of the light thing either |
Maybe it's the d-bags pick up line, see hot chick at ramp with empty trailer, maye he was thinking she was with a boat load of other chicks and figured he'd hedge his odds so he used a cheesy line like that!
|
Not in Ohio either.
|
Here in New York, an empty trailer is considered a pretty good clue. And most of our trailer lights work!
Wait a minute, that's why the guy in that thread with the Explorer got stuck in the surf and had to be pulled out by two redneck pick trucks and two tractors. He didn't have his lights on! :lolhit: |
It's a solid no from KY as well. I have never heard of such crap, I even help launch and recover boats at a local bass tournament and never seen such. An empty boat trailer is clue enough for most people.....
|
Not here in Colorado either. Did any of the other vehicles in line have their headlights on????????:::bsflag:
|
I've seen some dumb sh!t here in Utah but never heard of that
|
I currently live in maryland, but did most of my trailer boating in Virginia. So you can definitely add Va, Md to the list. Not sure Washington D.C. has a public boat launch. But there is a Boat launch right next to Reagan National Airport that launches in to D.C. water. Been there too and never heard of this "rule"

Top ten explanations for sitting in line at a launch ramp with an empty trailer:
1) “My trailer was lonely, so I thought I’d let it pick up a boat.” 2) “I just shampooed my bunk carpeting and I’m waiting to go back in for a rinse.” 3) “There’s a trailer behind me?” 4) “No, I’m actually launching an invisible boat.” 5) “Somebody told me that if I sat here long enough, my prince would arrive. What’s your sign?” 6) “I can’t remember if this is the place I launched my boat – last spring.” 7) “I figured if I was nice enough to haul somebody out, they’d give me their boat.” 8) “I’m just breaking in my bunk carpeting by repeatedly getting it wet with no load on it.” 9) “I’m taking a survey of how many idiots leave their lights on in a launch ramp. You’re number one.” 10) “I’m practicing talking to idiots like you who think I should have my lights on.” |
