Boat Secure in Driveway

What are some methods you guys employ to secure your boat while parked in the driveway? Theres a lot of theft going on in our area, and I certainly would hate to come home and find the boat gone!

Currently, Ive a hardened 5/16" chain through one set of wheels with a master lock on it. Props are off snd stored in the house. Also have a security camera overlooking the driveway.

Once I get my garage built, worries will be over!

Locks and chains can be cut if they really want it that bad. Other than what you have maybe park a car in front of it?

Anything to slow them down and make noise. I bought a Ball Mount Lock for the coupler...not indestructible but a cheap piece to slow them down. I like the hardened chain idea also...they can cut the lock but it still takes time and can make noise pulling the chain. I even thought about hanging a few Cow bells from the axles to increase the noise factor...cheap but effective.

If it sits for weeks at a time take the wheels off...even if it's only one side.

I always park my pickup in front of it at night.

I have considered signing up with Vehicle Path so if it is stolen I'll know where it is.

If it is that close to the house, I'd consider hooking something up to the trailer that sets off an alarm if it's moved You could rig up an extention cord to look like it's charging the trailer (battery) or boat, and as soon as it breaks the circuit as in unplugged or pulled out of the driveway... WHEEEEEEEEEE!

You can get gps trackers from AT&T now for a pretty small monthly fee.

You can get a police boot to put on the wheel. It isn't going anywhere with that on. They arent that expensive. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Trimax-TWL100-...7086194&sr=8-7

Park it in the garage and put a vehicle in front of it!!!!!

Shag555 05-15-2012 08:24 PM

Unfortunately, my current attached garage is only 22' in length and my boat plus trailer is close to 34'... I could park the truck in front of the boat, but that leaves the wrest of the house wide open then (kidding)!!!

Im going to be building a 36'x30' pole building sometime this summer, but until then, i need a deterrant... Mightvbe just the log chain for now, and for when I'm home lots of lead in many calibers.

Keep it out of Pottsboro Texas

HEDGEHOGER 05-15-2012 10:32 PM

You could jack up one axle and remove a wheel I don't think a trailer would work to well missing a wheel

rfgonzo 05-15-2012 11:14 PM

Park the truck in front of it, and get yourself a 50cal. If the truck won't stop um the 50cal will!!!!

buy this http://www.worldtrackingsolutions.com/st_guardian.htm no monthly fee. Easy to use website, back up battery,,,,and you can set up a geo fence that will text and or email you if the boat is moved outside the specific area. Very low drain on batteries. Also cool if you every leave your boat in the lake for the weekend as well.

Tires off is not as big a deterrent as you'd think. My grandfather had removed all 4 tires from his trailer. Thieves pulled right in to his back yard, slapped 4 wheels on the trailer and off they went with his Mako center console. I like the idea of the power cable to the house that trips a loud horn alarm when interrupted. You wouldn't even have to actually plug it in. Just connect the two ends in the house together, set the end in the boat on a relay to trigger when the current is interrupted. Wire the other end to a 12v horn and you're good to go. And DEFINITELY park in front of it at night. That's probably the best theft deterrent you can have.

Wireless outdoor motion sensor for the house set inside the cockpit. Connected via wireless to the house alarm.

If someone jumps in the boat it sets the house alarm off. If someone steals the boat as soon as the sensor is out of range (50 ft) it sets the house alarm off. I also put a loud siren outside the house.... It will wake up 5 or 6 neighbors! lol

I have all the other stuff people mentioned too (Everything lol) as well as leaving the huge tow rig camped out in front of it 24-7!!

Throw a Bayliner cover over it! :lolhit:

A really cheap and low-tech easy alarm project: go get a tilt switch for a car alarm/rem start: $11.99 at Best Buy, also purchase a single bosche style SPDT realy $9.99@BBY. then buy a cheap 12v alarm Siren or five. Real easy to wire up, put some clips on the main power wires, and set the tilt switch so that if the boat angle changes, it will make contact, triggering the relay and thus as many SIRENS as you like. You can make it portable if you want, or install it on the boat with a simple toggle switch. Wire the relay like this terminals 87 and 86 12v+, terminal 85 is connected to one side of the tilt switch, the other side of the tilt switch is connected to battery 12v- along with the neg. side of the siren(s), terminal 30 of the relay connects to the positive side of the siren(s) the beauty of a circuit like this is it draws absolutely no current when at rest, so if you have a battery on your trailer for any reason, you could also install it onto the trailer.
If you want to do something a little more high-tech, check this out http://www.escortradar.com/entourage/
