I had the 420/TRS setup for 20 years and loved it. Parts were never a problem because I never needed any. I know the normal gaskets and seals are readily available. They are pretty much bullet-proof and shift nice and smooth. I still can't get used to the clah-clunk of the Bravos when they shift.

I would go with a 454mag/365 boat.
The 420 loses more power through the tranny and TRS and you really do not gain the 55hp difference any way. The 454 mag is upgradeable to 420hp iwth a cam, carb and exhaust. |
Love my 420 Trs setup ... 69.8 gps anytime. I prefer the TRS but I also like to be different. If I had to do it again I would find a newer stepped hull with xr's. The stock 420 manifolds must be replaced if they are the merc style. They WILL leak, I replaced with imco powerflows with trs specific tails. Some day I will add power so its nice to know that the trs will handle it. I believe the 420 trs setup was Offshore powerboat of the year in 88.

Personally i would choose the TRS setup....you don't have clutch cones or any shifting mechanisms to worry about in the TRS cause they are in the trans...the TRS can handle more HP then the bravo when compared stock for stock....and hell if the TRS blows up just bolt on some Konrads and then you'd be bulletproof :)

Trs burns more fuel. Had both in a 35 cig.

I'm a big fan of the trs's too. Smooth shifting, and they rarely break with modest hp.

Looked at the trs/420 boat last night. I have to admit, the trs engine compartment vs the bravo simply looks tough. Bigger tails, etc.
I must say, the '87 311 compared to my '88 27/29 fever makes the fountain look like a toy. If anyone knows of decent boats in the area I'm 5 min from Oneida lake today (sat) |

I ended up with a best of both, 415/bravo combo.
