Try turning the key.. someone else can chime in here but I think the rotation is clockwise.

I fought a very similar problem last year on an HP500, turned out to be a bad rev limiter module. Engine would crank and kind of act like it was going to start, but not because the rev limiter would kick in a cut the ignition for a second. Even the spark test was showing good. Kind of like having a 2 rpm rev limit! Having someone with the proper diagnostic tools was the only way we found this without some expensive parts replacement......although that module was pricey enough!
