OH Registration #'s

Got inspection by the OH boating patrol today... He indicated that I needed to change my registration decals to mailbox type stickers, because "officers dont like flashy stickers... You could get pulled over for that." He was nice enough, and, Im actually glad he did the inspection, but geez, whats this world coming to? Like putting a front license plate on a Corvette!

Oh well, like the Corvette, i guess Ill take my chances with the "flashy" two tone, shaddow lettering...

It is pretty much like that in any state. In Michiga you are supposed to have block letters at least 3" tall. I have always used custom numbers with a shadow. Mine is also in italics and a font called "Andy". I have never been bothered (now I say that I will probably get pulled over tomorrow). But mine are red with silver shadow on white, so they are still pretty visible. My graphics guy just put a new set on my boat today and he told me that I should go with block letters to avoid getting pulled over...

Kenthegreenkeeper 05-26-2012 11:17 PM

Yup, technically, block letters, above the rub rail. Oh, yeah and we have that decibel limit now, also.

I dock next to a couple of watercraft officers on the Ohio.

Seriously (decibel limit)??? What's the limit? I've got a stock setup but was going to start playing with HP and of course that involves new exhaust.

I know exactly what your talking about. I was stopped 3x last year. They never wrote me a ticket but told me my numbers could not be shadowed. I'm going to say where it happened to you this year was on Lake Erie? It's the only place they stopped me and I was at 4 other inland lakes last year and not once did they say anything. I took the the one set off so I only have a solid color now called the Coast Gaurd Aux had them come to me house to do a safety inspection this year and got a sticker so hopefully they can't say much of anything. I get tired of being harassed I know they do safety inspections but I think they take it to the next level a lot of times cause they want something to do and want to feel important. My wife and I was stopped 2 weeks ago by the coast gaurd 100 yards outside of the Casino in from of Kelly's just pretty much for nothing. Asked where I was going where I came from what I was doing when I get to where I was going and if I was ever boarded by the CG then said ok have a nice day.

Not on lake Erie. On all inland lake except for Buckeye it is I believe

Shag555 05-27-2012 11:51 AM

This was Lake Milton, East of Akron. Not too suprising since its a busy weekend, but hey, i keep my boat well maintained and it shows...

Is there a website that OH has that lists regs? The inspection receipt I got lists a bunch of stuff, but I'd also like to know about the booze regs, etc, etc, etc...

OK, thanks. I make a lot of runs to PIB. My numbers fade to the color of the boat. You cannot read them from 20' away :). The coast guard has never mentioned it and I usually get boarded once a year.

You cannot have an open container on buckeye lake I believe. I have had the same issues with reg numbers. What I had to do was use block letters but shadow the block letters..so basically I had red block letters made in red, one size bigger then the blue ones..not as nice as I wanted but I also dont want to give them a reason to harrass me. Also after the year gets going they kind of back off on the reg numbers..but its always like that at the beginning of the year.

my buddies old boat is still running around here with the numbers backwards LOL

registration numbers

Just had the boat lettered this week. Red with black shadow and not block style. First day on the Ohio river got to cincy and on the way back we got stopped. Wrong style letters must be block and one color that contrast to the hull color.
Next question any alcohol on board. No. Well we will do a saftey inspection. Everythings good have a nice day not another mention of the registration.

You fill the blanks$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Just move to Kentucky. I did.

Shag555 05-28-2012 06:35 AM

Interesting.... Seems like theres interpretation of the law here from one officer to another. Officer that did mine told me that the letters had to be black.

88242LS 05-28-2012 09:51 AM

some care some don't, most times if its legible they leave you alone, my buddy that had the numbers backwards had them like that for 5 yrs

No they dont have to be black..just contrast to the hull..

c_deezy 05-28-2012 06:12 PM

Mine fade from black to yellow, on a yellow hull. They must not be too hard to see, Homeland Security was able to make them out from i-don't-know-where and show up at my house the next day... :lolhit:

I read up on this just a few weeks ago just to make sure I was still legal-especially when going out on a holiday weekend!
