Here, when the tide is running out combined with river flow, if you don't compensate for this with a modified heading, the current will push you into shallow waters. It never ceases to amaze me the folks in boats pointing the bow direct at the point they want to hit and the current sweeping them into the shallows, next thing you see is them hitting bottom and churning up mud or worse yet, getting stuck. It appears they have no idea what has happened to them, I just shake my head, thinking at least they are somewhat close to land and the local tow boats in abundance to help them out. By the time they look for help, they are already too shallow for me to get very close to them. Attempts to warn them prior give me rude responses or go totally ignored.

Thanks for the link. I've been waiting to see something on it.
I read the story and it basically went exactly as planned. Good for them. Orig story estimated it as a 17 hr trip and their actual time was I think 17hrs 45 mins! They had the gulf stream figured in and paddled one course for the 1st 10 hrs and then changed it once across the g.s.
One of the guys was 58 yrs old too.
Gives us old coots hope after all :helmet:
