What is this?! An antennae?

These (crappy iphone) pics are looking forward into the tunnel on my 24 Skater.

There's no markings on it. Three tiny screws on the top but I cant get to them. There's no hoses (not a pump for a ballast tank like I originally thought) or wires.

Theres a single white round cord coming out of the top that has a connector on it like you would see on the back of a CB radio where the antenna goes in. Its just dangling there not connected to anything.

The other wires you see are the nav light, they aren't connected together.

Any ideas?! http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/8546/whas.jpg

Depth finder???

waterboy222 06-14-2012 12:15 PM

It wouldn't be a depth finder, it would have to be mounted to the hull to read through it.. this is on its own little shelf and theres about 8" of clearance under it before the tunnel...Plus it's so far forward, that part of the tunnel is well out of the water.

Flux capacitor.

That was my first thought when I saw it. You beat me to it.

First knee jerk reaction...

...was that it is an "old school" auto trim/level sensor. Did a fair amount of research to prove or disprove. Found some, but nothing that looked anything like your picture. Did find some level indicators/switches, but enough different to not feel comfortable with saying that is what it is.

Looked for RF amplifiers. Nothing similar, plus to be an amplifier it would have two radio looking connectors and power to it.

In both cases, the ones I found all looked more like inverters than racor oil filter containers.

I think my first thought about some sort of auto trim/level system use is the best thought I have, but then I also think the "flux capacitor" idea might be right on!

Did you try to trace the white wire to see where it goes?

Here's another thought, could it part of a security system?

If you are into conspiracy theories, a terrorist bomb!

POWERPLAY J 06-14-2012 12:52 PM

Q-36 space modulator ???

Tom A. 06-14-2012 12:58 PM

My initial thought is a speaker or subwoofer.

bulletbob 06-14-2012 01:03 PM

1/2 kilo of coke is my vote. The boat did come out of florida. Lol

alindquist 06-14-2012 01:18 PM

I have something similar looking in my boat and I'm pretty sure it was for the electronic compass/heading sensor that I took out... is there an 8 pin (or so) harness that hooks up to it?

Florida Floater 06-14-2012 02:05 PM

Nice job J!

Marvin is so upset he gets blamed for everything, he plans to destroy all of Macomb County!

OF COURSE, little he has ever planned has worked, so don't worry too much.

High water alarm?

:eekdrop:

I would have swam to shore by the time that thing got wet!

I thought it was a flux capacitator too but it looks NOTHING like the one that runs my other toy!

I am thinking some sort of transponder? It IS an ex raceboat so maybe it was left behind after the rerig?

The cable that comes out of it looks like a beefier version of cable coax..

Mbam 06-14-2012 03:42 PM

Looks like an electronic compass sensor I used to have.

chazguernsey 06-14-2012 04:29 PM

Electronic Compass?

Maybe an electronic compass sender?

Sorry, should have looked at second page first, see others have already suggested it LOL

I was beginning to think I had lost my touch!

Thanks to many hints, I finally found what it is... YEAH!

It, in fact, is a VDO Logic Compass Sensor NO1 540 202

Cloaking device

Double Rigged 06-14-2012 07:06 PM

My bet is it says VDO on it. Many old Skaters had an electronic compass at one time. It is the heading senors for that. Used to install them back in the day before gps. A lot of the race boats had them.

Cash Bar 06-14-2012 10:06 PM

I figured it was the GPS your mom had installed.

Dehumidifer but boat would have to get WET for it to work!
