Houston we have a problem!

This failure occured when the U-Joint failed and shot out the starboard side of the drive taking out the Gimball Ring with it. The drive only hung on by the Tie Bar and Steering. Good thing the drive shaft stayed in. Next time you lose a drive you might want to check it out before you idle home

CigDaze 07-02-2002 04:18 PM

Holy Chit!!!!
How'd the boat handle that very destructive failure?

Julio 07-02-2002 04:20 PM

Indication

Did you have any indication this was about to happen? Did the outdrive make any noise or vibrate excessly?
I hate to see damage like this and hope it doesn't happen to me.
:(

HiPerf2000 07-02-2002 04:23 PM

  WOW

MitchStellin 07-02-2002 04:29 PM

Hey dude, I can fix that. My Dad is a Dentist and has an awsome set of tools.

hot water 07-02-2002 04:29 PM

The boat was just coming up on plane from 5mph zone. The owner has had one drive failure before. (Just the standard upper failure) There was no indication of any impending failure. When it failed he heard a muffled noise then the immediate RPM climb of the starboard motor. Thinking that it was a drive failure like the one before he just idled back to the nearest marina.

CigDaze 07-02-2002 04:40 PM

Probably lucky it happened when it did and not well on plane.

The best thing that the drive shaft stayed in. If it had come out there would have been a inch and a half hole in the back and he would have had to beach or swim

BAJA342 07-02-2002 04:51 PM

What size motors are infront of those drives?

mxz800 07-02-2002 04:56 PM

OUCH!!!!!!

Looks frighteningly familiar!!

Looks a lot like my drive did when I pulled the boat up on the trailer after whacking a submerged stump last fall. It shattered the gimbal ring and upper housing. Only thing holding the drive on was the hydraulic lines and the bellows. Luckily for me, my driveshaft also stayed in the coupler, or we would have been on the bottom.

I can't describe the feeling you get when you jump in the water and reach down and you can't feel your drive!

Budman 07-02-2002 05:25 PM

Frightened Turtle??

Can you say (in a high voice) "shrinkage"? :D :D :D

hot water 07-02-2002 05:33 PM

Troutly,

It is and I cant tell you, sorry

The failure had nothing to do with the company that did the upgrade. Wouldn't want to give a unwarranted black eye to somebody ;)

Gearhead99 07-02-2002 09:20 PM

Ouch !!

That's going to leave a mark...
