Oh yea it happened as reported, spoke to a guy who is best buds with Bill T,son (Ron T) they were touching close to 200 and a pleasure boat pulled in front, they were cutting wide to go around & hooked- the 3 times around is also correct- if u can picture the old movie top gun when they got into a flat spin-apparently same sort of deal and then she semi stuffed.
And yep no injuries and my way is getting the once over but appears ok As far as pullin those kinda speeds on that water - I dunno- all I no is I'm saving my sheckles for a mystic. Granted I will be 253yrs old...... |

Well they certainly spun, hard to tell how many times, at least twice from what i can see.
They were certainly going fast. 190mph fast?? who knows. Lucky guys right there. |
well the speed is a factor but at least now there is actual video of what happened..

It is hard to judge the speed in the video (or even the side to side distance of the boats). I'd be surprised if that was 190 mph, but one thing is for sure... That glass-like water is what kept this as nothing more than a sunny side up spin. Had the water been much rougher the boat would have caught and flipped/rolled violently. Glad to see everyone is okay, that could have been a really bad scene! Hopefully it was a learning experience too. :) |

I was envisioning a near miss and cranking the wheel too hard to avoid a collision, which caused the spin. In the video it looks like they spun way after going around that boat.

Looks like My Way swung out wide to avoid the pleasure cruiser, then turned in too sharp to catch Aqua and hooked it. Looks like Aqua went on this side (video angle) of the cruiser.

Bing bing bing we have a winner, that's exactly how it was explained to me

The sport cruiser is not moving not on plane and no wake.
The Mystic went from speed to 0 mph in 2-3 seconds. |

BTW, I did not notice a PWC anywhere in that video as was reported to be the cause of the accident in the other thread.
That video shows exactly what I was told at the bay that weekend, MyWay on the outside, AM on the inside, turn at speed. Also a chance he got into the wake from AM while turning, which is not going to be seen from that distance. The water looks flat, but that region must be the worst "boat chop" area in the country. The port sponson lifts right before the spin |
He is lucky he did not go into an uncontrolled spin heading for the trees and land which he was fairly close.
|
What was the condition of the rudder after te spin? I don't think that even the rudder king, B.L. could make one to stand that spin.....

Aquamania cut back there outward distance on there rudder after the flip in key west ( rudder closer to the transom). KR We just made a custom 3 degree wedge that pitched the rudder back 3 degrees away from the transome on Aqua-Mania. Also what saved Aqua-Mania when coming too fast into the turn with My Way, were the newly installed prop shaft brakes designed by Turbine Marine, that we just completed on that boat a week before. They were built for exactly this reason. I was told by the throttle man that they were pumping the brakes HARD in that turn to slow down. My Way on the other hand just came in too hot trying to pass Aqua. Glad everyone is fine. |

Thanks for setting me straight. KR |
I've been in a 90 degree turn at 130ish and the G forces were tugging on your shorts. I can't imagine the G force in that spin:eek::eek::eek:

Bill,Gregg, Bob, Rich....HEADS UP>>> There's an offshore race in Sarasota this weekend !! And we would enjoy the company (Big piston or Turbine) on the racecourse..plenty of limelight to go around! small print....... you will have to turn...fast...like 50 times...actually ..you going to have to turn ridiculously fast...like 50 times...and... there is no lunch stop (wtf)....and unfortunately, no one cares who made it to the first turn, first.....oh..and you can't slow down for 80 miles..(sorry, it's just kinda how it is).. probably will be other boat traffic on the course (no jet skis though) so you will have to avoid them..if possible ....yeah and well one last thing...the water probably won't be flat as a pancake. (I know.. really? ) Seriously, were making some calls to see if we can get to lay down a little bit .... no one has called us back yet so your props will most likely get some airtime. http://www.sarasotasurf.com/Webcam.aspx So pack your beast up and come show us how it's done in front of 75k fans. (or pack your family and friends up and come say hello and hang with all (your friends) the racers and crews in the pits)...either way ,we'd ALL love to see you guys at one of the best races of the year!! XOXO Miss Geico |
