Explosion & Fire, three injured!
Everyone's worse nightmare. Hopefully this isn't as bad as it seems. I'm not home to see specifically where this happened. But, I think that was real close, if not at the gas dock. Could have been really bad! All we can do now is learn from this event and pray for a good outcome for the injured.

Absolutely a boater's worst...
...nightmare!
It will be interesting to see if it is announced where the fire started! Please, those more local, keep us advised. |
There should be an Auto Vent/ Preignition blower activater on Marine Ignition switches. They'd work off a time delay like a Glow Plug in a Diesel engine. I wouldn't mind waiting 10 or 15 seconds for the starter to engage if it meant the engine compartment was clear of fumes?? I've seen a lot of fires this season from Boats to Jet Skis. People get complacent when it comes to Safety. Hop in and Go! Unfortunately, kids are blowing themselves up all over the place. This heat wave has Carbs Vapor Locking and fuel tanks puking a lot of fumes and even liquid. Thank God there weren't any children aboard. Could have been Tragic.

Thank you for the update...
...with what little information given so far, almost sounds like they detonated when they powered up to pull away from the dock.
For some reason people think the best way to prevent fume build up when fueling the boat is to have the blower on. Not true!!! Depending on blower set up, it can actually draw fumes into the engine bay and when rev'ed up, you can very easily have this situation. When fueling do not have engine hatches open, do not have blower on, do not have electric attached. When ready to leave, exchange engine bay air at least four times before starting.

This article provides more detail. According to this account, the boat was at the fuel dock and had just fueled up. See attached link for more details.

Second Update - looks like the easy stuff was the cause!
Probably the last we will learn of this event. Glad everyone will make a full recovery. I'll let everyone draw their own conclusion.
