Newby Questions - Formula Boat
 

Hi guys, New to the form and looking at getting into a PowerBoat. My last boat was 1988 225 Four Winns Sundowner. That was more 9 years ago. Looking for a sportier boat now. Looking for a 25-27ft Formula SR1 or LS model (single engine) in the mid to late 90's, low hrs, fresh water, mint shape etc... Want to spend between 20-35,000. Can anyone tell me how many hrs a boat should have on it before a rebuild is necessary. I don't want a modded boat, but a stock turn key boat. What years are good and what years are bad and what year has issues. Also has anyone delt with the Performance Boat Center, in MO. I am willing to travel for a boat, but would like to keep it close to me in MI, IN, OH etc...

boat like that will most likely have a 454 or 502. I would say 5-600hrs but there are guys rebuilding after 300 and I have seen guys run them 1000hrs on no rebuild. Stock BBC chevys like that can last forever it just depends on how well they were maintained and treated.

had a 94 Formula 271 sr1 w/ a 502 mag, very nice reliable ride! would run about 60mph! good luck

I would just have a compression test done on the motor and check the fluids that should give you a good determination of how the engines are doing, plus hearing it run. Some engines like the bigger ones out there have a standard shelf life, but really these stock type engines with correct care really dont have a shelf life. Problem is a lot of people that own these type of boats like to really rod them and combined with a lot peoples negilence on standard maintenece procedures/winterizing these types of boats have more engine issues than your standard 4winns or something like.
