RC Boats Anyone build one from scratch??

So in the off season, I race RC Offroad Trucks and Buggies. I have been doing so on and off since just a little guy. Anyway, lately I have been thinking about purchasing an RC boat to play around with when anchored out at our local sandbar.... But then I though I want it to be as close to my real boat as possible. So I figured, why not build the hull from scratch.... Any of you guys built an RC boat from scratch or ran across a forum where guys are building them. Just curious to see others ideas. I would like a scale version of my Velocity..

I built an airboat from balsa from scratch when i was a kid but I think it was a kit. Had a little airplane motor it was loud as hell but fun.

jrcbd.com/content.php is a pretty cool site. Lots of cool projects & people to help. Just like full size boating, how much do you eant to spend?

low_psi 08-08-2012 11:42 AM

I am thinking of building the structure in balsa, then laminating with fiberglass and gel coat.

It really isn't about how much I want to spend... I have all electronics as I race RC cars so I have an abundance of servos, receivers, radios, etc. And the materials to build the boat hull from scratch can't be that much. Balsa, fiberglass, etc...

POWERPLAY J 08-08-2012 11:47 AM

My brother makes his own plugs and pops molds from them. Not rocket science but very time consuming. Be easier to find a hull and sculpt a deck to look like your Velocity. I can ask if he has a blank hull laying around if ya want.

Didnt really mean it like that. If you have all the stuff & can build it yourself it wouldnt be very expensive, you might find a similar hull to what you want for a couple hundred bucks if you dont build one the running gear would be around that & a motor a few hundred. I have a 4' cat with a full mod motor that will run 80+ it is evil!!

drozz30 08-08-2012 04:09 PM

Im in the process of building a 48inch cat from plans i downloaded free. Stringers and bulkheads are made from plywood. Going to use balsa to cover it then glass it.

How thick and what type of plywood are you using?

Not sure on the type but is 1/4" i bought at home depot. Just found out that instead of glassig the outside i can brush on slow setting epoxy. It should be lighter and still pretty strong. I glued the stringers and bulkheads together with epoxy and coated it all with resin i brushed on. It will keep it from absorbing water or fuel.

I have seen others build the hull with a balsa outer skin then gelcoated. I think that is the way I am going to go as well. Were did you get the plans? I would like to look at some plans to get an idea what type of structure is required.

Randy Nielsen 08-10-2012 03:37 AM

You can use thin sheets of birch for the hull, if you steam it you can form it how you want without splitting & it will be plenty strong after you glass over it. Stringers can be 3/8 to1/2 inch plywood. Bulkheads can be 1/4 inch. General placement for stringers is a 5 inch spread. hope that helps, Randy

I got the plans from rcuniverse. In the gas boat forum. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_75..._1/key_/tm.htm

Lots of info in the thread i linked and the plans are posted there a few times as well.

I have one for sale it's a cat from aero marine and has a 3hp engine it's complete and ready to go. You are better off buying an empty hull and starting from there if you want to build one.

Sorry, don't want gas, don't want a cat. I enjoy building things so I don't want to start with a premade hull. I want to do all the work myself. I have been in the RC hobby for 20+ years, and am good with wood and fiberglass/gel coat. So rightn now the only way to go is from scratch.. When I start the project, I will post progress pics. I probably won't start the project until fall.

GO FOR IT- I WAS INTO R/C PLANES FOR YEARS AND FULL SCALE BOATS. BUT NOT R/C BOATS,MAINLY BECAUSE THEY WERE SMALL AND BOUNCED AROUND -OUT OF SCALE.
SO I GOT INTO GIANT SCALE PLANES THEN THOUGHT WHY NOT G/S BOATS -I FOUND A GUY WHO DID A 7' CAT BUT STILL TO SMALL.
I'M THINKING 12-14' SCALE V-HULL WITH A KAWASAKI 300 JETSKI DRIVE AND ENGINE-YES INSANE YES- BUT THERES A GUY HERE IN MAINE WHO BUILT A 30' MODEL OF THE USS MISSOURI W/AN OUTBOARD IN IT. HE COULD SIT IN AND FIRE THE GUNS(Co2)-SO WHY NOT.
WHAT A BLAST - SINTTING IN YOUR BOAT AND SCREAMING A BIGASS R/C BOAT AROUND:lolhit:
I HAVEN'T DONE IT YET -GOT SKI AND BASIC PLANS -BUT MY POINT IS YOU HAVE THE R/C SKILLS, IF YOUR INTERESTED IN A V-HULL LOOK THE BANDIDO ON GLEN L
http://www.glen-l.com/
http://www.boatdesigns.com/Bandido-S...nfo/60-872PDF/
YOU CAN GET STUDY PLANS W LOFTING LINES AND PATTERNS ENOUGH TO DO THE HULL FOR R/C THEN MODIFY/MODERNIZE THE DECK.
IF I CAN FIND MY PLANS I'LL SEND THEN TO YOU.WHATS YOUR EM ADDRESS -KEEP ME POSTED

How much would you have in a complete setup?

lavey jr 03-25-2015 07:41 PM

I started building one by hand. Bottom made of mostly wood, fiberglass, and bondo. The deck is all hand carved from hard cell foam. Haven't completed it yet. Next step is to make a mold off of it.

What's the website that has all the *****en 50" "Apaches" and little mini #6 drives? Its some funky name and hard to find on the web. But the site has all kinds of cool stuff.

I'm into basically anything with a remote control (copters, planes, boats, trucks, drones...) But I would never want to build something. I like to play with them, not build them. lol

ONCE YOU ASSEMBLE THE FRAME - I'D USE ELMERS WOOD GLUE LIGHTLY, IT GIVES YOU TIME TO GET THING STRAIGHT AND SQUARE. THEN BALSA SHHEETS OR LITE PLY TO PUT SKIN ON
IF YOU'VE NEVER BUILT BEFORE - I'D SUGGEST GOING TO YOUR LOCAL HOBBY SHOP AND ASK QUESTIONS.THOSE GUYS ARE VERY HELPFUL, I'D PCK UP A CHEAP MIDWEST MODELS KIT TO PRACTICE ON THEY HAVE A GREAT PHOTO INSTRUCTION BOOK
THIS KIT OR ONE LIKE IT IS A GOOD STARTER -
