Catastrophe 08-12-2012 06:05 PM

How were the authorities at the drivers meeting this year ?

Last time I went they as much as told us they didn't want us there.

3. I wonder if there was not an unseen issue from the previous spin....I can't imagine the stresses that were put on that boat in the spin

4. I am certainly not one to have the knowledge or experience to question anyone running that boat

5. I personally think that cats have an issue where they like to sail and it can happen even in small waves at high speeds and I think that cat builders need to start looking at control surfaces and computers to prevent that (like the flip up hatch on a NASCAR)

here is another video with Johnny Tomlinson (Tomlinson seems to be a name that likes to go fast haha) letting it rip in a Skater not too long ago and at 1:56 is what makes me nervous about cats

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc5Y9...feature=relmfu

I do not like the way they seem to dance from edge to edge if they get a bit airborne and things are not perfect and even on some of those other small waves there was a lot of "bow rise" IMO

the Razz Apache video from years earlier on that same link with the same driver (probably different guy on throttles) sure they are going much much slower (probably 85 or so tops), but they are hitting huge waves and getting huge air and even on the one jump where they get way up there and land back down on the transom it does not appear they are close to turning over.....I am not sure a cat even at those much slower speeds would say the same thing

I think it is time to look into some computer controls for cats going that speed with a foil or control surface that will activate past a particular degree of bow rise...I am not sure what could be done for the dancing

I am not being critical of the owner of the driver at all I think they can drive their boat how they wish and Bill Tomlinson has proven he can run hard and fast....but IMO cats go over too much for me and I wish there was a way to stop it or in this case a way to prevent a large bow rise and very hard transom landing.....and again I wonder if there was not prior damage from the spin

I agree with your thinking. Good post.

Let me try to bring this thread back to earth with a few comments. First, it’s a tribute to John Cosker and the folks at Mystic for building a boat that could take a hit like that at that kind of speed and allow the crew to escape unharmed. Second, realistically, more than a little luck was involved there too.

Now here’s the more controversial part. I love Poker Runs as much as many of you and have participated in and helped run one in upstate New York for over 20 years. (So yes, I know a little bit about this game.) It is my humble opinion that boats running 150 MPH plus in any organized event are an accident waiting to happen. Let’s face it, nobody makes a boat that can withstand a serious impact at that kind of speed. And as others have already said, then there’s the human body inside of it that’s also got to survive.

In professional offshore racing, we have closed courses with professional medical help (generally) mere minutes away. Most poker Runs have courses spread out over many miles and having enough fully trained medical boats to cover a full run is problematic at best. But professional races also have one big thing that Poker Runs do not – closed courses. How long will it be before somebody slams into an innocent boater or PWC pilot that strays into a bunch of fast moving (mostly armature) poker runners? Let’s face it folks, the possibility is real.

So I’m not sure what to do when everybody wants to have a good time, and part of that good time is going faster than anybody else. You can roller skate on water at 60 MPH. We’ve seen race boats crash at 100 MPH and completely disintegrate. At 150 MPH in an uncontrolled environment, far worse things can happen than what the crew of My Way experienced this past weekend. Are we just asking for trouble?

People love to think that they are somehow the knowledgeable, experienced voice of reason. It's actually
hilarious how a bunch of you are hating on Mr. Tomlinson... And villainizing him and such. It is pretentious and ignorant the way you guys are behaving. I personally was really looking forward to seeing him run at the shootout again.... And I also feel that we are all lucky that this guy and others are pushing the boundaries and finding whats still possible in offshore boats... Alot of you naysayers I bet are less in control of your v-bottoms at 70 plust than Bill is at 150mph.

That mitchie i agree alot of computer offshore racers!!!!!!

You're probably right about his skills.

I don't think anybody's actually making fun of them or intending disrespect, I think a lot of people are genuinely scared to death. It's one thing to go 100 mph, and yet another at those turbine speeds. I think the following and leave it at that.

1. People are scared that such experienced people are having these things happen.

2. They don't want those people to become another tragedy, another fatal headline.

3. Some are just plain scared that they might be on the water at the same time some 150 plus mph boat is heading in their direction.

I don't see any hate here, some genuine concern? Yes. That same boat has been in the headlines twice lately.

The turbine probably did explode after it ingested the sea water at umpteen-gozzilion RPM. Remember when your buddy jammed a stick in the front wheel spokes of your BMX bike when you were a kid?

Not read entirely through this thread, but certainly glad to hear all are ok !!!

As to the speculation if it was caused by a deep draft wake or cabin cruiser wake, I will add this.

At approximately the same time there were 4 deep draft vessels taveling upbound on the seaway. Having been a recreational performance boater on the St Lawrence for over 10+ years, and stationed with the Coast Guard here for the past year and a half, I will personally attest that the reflection of waves in the seaway can occur for a long period of time after the frieghters have passed. It is also very uncommon to see that many frieghters pass in the same direction so close to each other.

I was not on scene when the accident occured (I was actually at Steamboat cut watching them pass Rockport), but would agree that the surface conditions of the combined vessel traffic, particularly rough that day, would be capable of creating a swell large enough to launch MY WAY, even without the freighters in sight.

Glad to see the crew is ok, and look forward to seeing MY WAY return to the waters.

It amazes me how people continually post their "speculations" as to what may or may not have caused this terrible incident, when they openly admit they where not there. Yes, there where three ships that had recently past. MY WAY had already successively negotiated
their wakes. At the time of the incident I WAS there. Maybe I was being conservative about the length of the cruiser. Only wake near the incident was created by this boat. Here is a better video showing the crash. As you can see the water was reasonably calm. No ship waves!

Wow. Wild ride. it's clear that it was a wave in that video. Thanks for posting. Artie

bill is defently one of the nicest guys in the sport! like everyones been saying poker run are supposed to be fun and not a speed race will ask him if he is having fun flying around the at 150+ i know its fun watching!!! just because he has a turbine boat dosent mean he shouldnt be able to enjoy a poker run with the rest of us glad crew is ok !!!

FogduckerIII 08-12-2012 07:57 PM

That vid should shut up most people, very clear what happened and VERY lucky with the outcome. Bottom line IMHO, there is a time and a place to "stretch your legs" and that was not one of them.....look how many boats there are in the frame of the video......bad choices made...............glad nobody was hurt or killed..............:eekdrop:
