OT - supplying VIN to potential buyer

so, i'm selling my Silverado and have an "interested" party who wants the VIN so he can run a Carfax. i can understand the request, and I am either naive or paranoid, but is there any risk in supplying this information to someoneon the internet? he hasnt looked at rhe truck or even asked to come an look at it.

what can be done with the VIN

Have him/them come look at the vehicle first. Then tell them you will provide the carfax. Takes all guess work out, and you can use the carfax for multiple "lookers". They buy, then they get carfax.

Since VINS are in every windshield of every vehicle made, and readily available to anyone that wants to look at it, I don,t see much of a problem of giving out that info. Kinda like guys posting pictures of their vehicles on the net, and hiding the plate numbers, yet they drive around 24/7 with then exposed for anyone to see.

that's exactly what i suggested, but he says he can't take the time to look at a truck if the Carfax isnt good. i told him good luck with his search.

i hear ya. i also see dealers posting VINs on their ads, but i'm skeptical...

I have heard of stories where one can get replacement keys off a vin#
Yes, they are all on the windshields easily read. Unless you look at mine because i have a peice of paper covering them up! Yes, not paraniod, just not too trusting!

Why not buy a carfax yourself, on your own vehicle, and offer that up to him? Of course, keep the vin# covered on the paper :)

At either rate, if someone is truly interested they have to come and see it in person otherwise they are truly not serious. JMO, that is.

Funny, not looking at any vehicle in person if your a serious buyer. Carfax can come back clean as a whistle, but paint and current engine etc. might not even be original, might not even run. No substitution for in person look and drive. Then comes paper / maint records. JMO

I don't see the big deal. I would and I have asked for vin
numbers to run car fax, I would of want to waist my time
Going to look at something if it didn't have a clean carfax.
And carfax is still not 100%
