Race Engine rebuild
Hey everyone..
A friend and I recently purchased a boat from a guy who used to race in Panama. As part of the sale he offered to throw in an old racing engine and of course we said yes. The engine is a high compression racing engine with direct manual injection, with the large individual intake trumpets. the engine looks to be in ok shape, as all openings were sealed and the intakes were covered for preservation. The intake cover has Hawk embroided in it. We would like to have the engine rebuilt. We are not looking to race again and ware not looking to have a 1000hp racing engine, just rebuild this one to as close to its current specs as possible. Cloud someone please recomend a reliable and knowledgable rebuilder, preferably in the Florida area? I will post more pics tomorrow. Thanks !! http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...0905-00073.jpg |

Give Gary Smith a call at Carolina Race Engines in Ft Lauderdale. (954) 815-6461 He built many engines at Hawk for years before opening Carolina Racing. He will most likely know the exact build specs of that motor.

The vintage Can-Am race car guys might be all about that mechanical injection.

I deal with a lot of constant flow injection systems. The bigest problem they would have is the lack of an acceleration enrichment curcuit. To make the engine accelerate, you have to set the idle REALLY rich. I'm talking choke and gag in no-wake-zone rich.
Kinsler can convert it to EFI. That will make for a bad-ass set up. The mid tange would be unbeleivable! It would sound really sweet too! |
here are more pics of the engine. It definetly needs a thorough restoration...

after much consideration, we have torn down the engine locally and decided to rebuild it with a standard carb/manifold set up.
Upon further inspection of the components once the engine was opened, here is what we found: the block is a 454 gen IV bowtie tall deck, with 4.500 bore. heads are GM high perf 118cc flat top pistons the crank is a crower with the following specs (which I hope someone here can help me identify) http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...psc3e63e9c.jpg http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2e840f99.jpg and these engravings, which i wrote down, as well http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...psb55abccc.jpg given that its a tall block and a bowtie, which is already 4.500 bore, I would like to install a 4.500 crank and 6.535 rods , which would make it a 572cid. What are you guys thoughts on this? has anyone built up this set up before? Will i have to grind some clearance in the block for the 4.500 crank? Thanks guys. |
Cice prformance in Ohio has alot fo experience with that setup, Chuck had United racing engines in Miami, was the first builder for Victory team in Dubai.
