Longest Cruise with an offshore
Cigarette Bullet (31')
Three years ago left Marinette WI across lake Michigan to South Fox Island then to Makinaw then up through the Soo lock to Munising MI and returned. over 1200 mile ten day vacation. One of best vacations ever Does anyone else use there offshore as a cruiser |
Not exactly an extened cruise but we left Louisville yesterday afternoon and had dinner in Cincy. Made it back for lunch today. Spent the night on the river near a gambling boat. 240 round trip, those damn 12 volt coffee makers do not work!
Tim T. |
Marinette to Munising... wow, that's a haul.
How big of a boat was this? Also, what was the procedure for getting through the locks? I've always wanted to make a trip through the locks, but have yet to find the time. I'll be up in Houghton in a few weeks and would like to do either Marquette or Isle Royal from Houghton. Marquette is a little further, but more protected waters. Although... there ain't much on that main land between Baraga and Big Bay. Longest trip I've ever done was Metro Beach (Lk St Clair) to Cleveland in a day. Burned up 108 gallons out of the 110 gallon gas tank. Yeah, not one of the smarter things I've ever done. I guess I should have left that Baja alone on the way down. :D -Bayley |
I think I might have the record for the shortest cruise !
I wanted to take the girlfriend to dinner on the boat but was running kind of late so we dropped in the boat at Blossom Heath, which is between 9 mile and 10 mile in Jefferson just north of Miller marina. Well we decided to have dinner at the Beach Grill which is about a 1/4 of a mile south of Miller . Total mileage on the boat couldn't have been more than a mile !:D We could have saved at least an hour buy just driving to the Beach Grill ... we actually had to drive by it to get to the launch ! |
26scarab, a true powerboater.
Same for me, restaurants and tiki bar are maybe a mile from my pier. But its a rule, never do you ever go to dinner and the tiki bar by land. |
Friend of a friend drove his 412 Formula from NJ to Florida and back last year. Never heard too much about the trip other than "Never again."
|
over 1200 mile ten day vacation Does your cig have broken light purple stripes on the sides. If so I believe I have seen it on the chain O mistakes and at the stergion? bay poker run last year. Looks good. |
Buy a cruiser!
AC :D |
I've seen and ridden on klaw's Bullet (last year)- it's an incredible cabin for a 31' boat, and a great riding hull to go with it. We talked about his trip too- one I would like to do some time! One thing for sure, this Bullet rarely sits still!
Cruisers may have more amenities, but the ride sucks compared to an offshore:D Gary- still hope to get together with you for a run out of Winthrop when I bring the AT home from MI! Saw you go by us when we were spectating at the SOTW- boat looks great! Jim |
It's not Lewis and Clark, but...
I'm planning a Norfolk-to-Philly trip for Labor Day week. Counting side trips up various rivers in the Chesapeake Bay, we're looking at 700 miles in nine days. It's a 382 Formula with A/C, TV/VCR, hot/cold water and a generator, so I expect the comfort level index to be pretty high. Unfortunately, I expect the gas bill to be pretty much the same.
Anyone else want to tag along? |

CRUISE WITH AN OFFSHORE
I somewhat frequently ( 3-4 times a summer ) cruise 300-400 miles one way in my Cig. Occasionally farther. Two or three couples go and we split the fuel costs. We generally cruise around 50 mph and get about 1.5 mpg. I cruise the Tennessee River from Knoxville down through Alabama and points beyond. Long distance cruising is great. I really don't care to cruise at 20 mph like most cruisers though.
|
Cruised from Marietta to Cincinnati and back over 4 days last week. 300 miles and 5 locks each way in a pair of 28’ Daytonas and a 24’ BAJA.
|
rbtnt....and what were you in?
cpqtim........throw the 12 volt overboard and buy a 1 burner Butane stove....it does coffee in 8 minutes. That 12 volt perker left my boat the first time out. 50 to 60 minutes for coffee...I don't have the patience....:) |
A 28' Eliminator Daytona with a pair of 540s.

My first "big" boat, ( it was to me at the time), was a 21' Mirage. Myself and my two kids, 13 and 14 at the time, went a little over 200 miles up to the north tip of the San Juan Islands, cruised around for 5 days and came back in a torrential downpour.
Had a Great time!!!:D |
in 1991,my (now) wife and i did the trent/severn waterway from Kingston Ontario to georgian bay from end to end and back in 12 days in my old power play 230.A little cramped but one of the best vacations of my life.
|
Great cruisers!
It's 32 miles north from my house to the dam, we do have 480 miles of shoreline if you go in all the nooks and crannies. A lot of friends live at or hang at the north end of the lake.
In the inboard ski boat it was pretty much an all day adventure if you wanted to go to that end of the lake- ok technically an hour long (each way) bouncy ride at cruise, slower with significant chop. With the Daytona everything is "close by", the ride is smoother, I can wait til the last minute to head for home etc. I suspect the mileage at 60 (3400 rpm) is not far off from my skiboat at 30 either. I could not imagine plodding along in a real cruiser, but I must admit, my wife likes to mooch a little AC in my buddies Sea Ray sundancer from time to time. |
This past 4th of July:
Put in at Sandusky, went to Put-In-Bay, then took the long way to Toledo, then back to Sandusky. Next Day, attempted to go to Cleveland but 4-6’ seas was too much for the 32’, stayed in Sandusky bay. Next day, went all the way to Metro Beach then back to Sandusky. Next day, went to Cleveland and back. All in all, we burnt over 350 gallons of gas in 4 days. It would have been more if day 2 wasn’t so bad |
Well, it is nice to see that not every power freak spends more time cleaning the bilge than running the boat!!!!
|
One thing I notice is after I built the big motor (540 675hp) I'm real hesitant to go real far. When I had the stock 502 I would run anywhere, anytime.
I just need two boats !!! :D |
How about the shortest ride in the biggest boat ??
We used to take my friend 55' Ocean yatch to dinner every Friday night . He lived less then a mile from the Warf side bar/resturant ! It would take longer to warm it up and through off the lines then it took to get there ! BUt we sure arived in style !!:D And for long trips he used to like to buy boats in florida just so he could run them back up the cost to NJ . 42' tempest , 48 ' chris craft ,58 sea ray etc . He is looking at a 41' Cigarette with diesels now . Hope I get to go ! |
Drove a Formula 272 from Trenton Marine Center to Baltimore Harbor, I think it was about a 10 hour trip, couldn't wait to get my feet on solid ground!:D
|
I thought I read somewhere that Florida Powerboat Club had a 10 DAY/1200 MILE poker run in April. Jacksonville to Pensacola?
|
Skatermike24, Did you have your anchor out:confused: . I went from Philly to Baltimore's Inner Harbor in 5 hours including getting lost. Missed Baltimore and knew something was wrong when I was about to go under the Kent Narrows Bridge. Coming back , it took 4 1/2 hours including a stop at the Chesapeake Inn for refreshments for about an hour. Also in a 272 Formula. 251 miles (gps) round trip. Stayed over at the Inner Harbor East Marina. Very nice except for the 3' stripe around the water line(oil slick). Had to wash the old bird twice to get it all off.
|
Mopower - did you have YOUR anchor out? In 1999, we did Baltimore Inner Harbor to Delran (10 miles past Philly) in 2 hours and twenty minutes. That included the long, long, no-wake zone out to the end of Ft. McHenry.
...Actually is was a very, very smooth day as well....;) BajaBob38 - If you show up, the Captain Morgans bill WILL be as big as the gas bill. :p |
Actually I had the anchor in the boat with me....called a WIFE. You know how that goes:rolleyes:
|
Understood.
The LAST thing you want to do is upset your cruising partner. I have been blessed with my better half. On that Balt-Philly trip, she kept looking over and asking why I wasn't running WFO. (What a woman!) On top of that, yesterday she drove 75 miles each way to go down to the boat , emptied everything out of the cabin, vacuumed it, scrubbed everything down (including the head), and re-stocked it. Then she cleaned all the uphostery in the cockpit and the sunpad. She spent five hours at the marina, and she's going back next week to put another coat of wax on it - and this is a 38-footer. She loves being on the boat and can't wait for the upcoming trip. With an attitude like that, I'm looking forward to a great trip in September. The Chesapeake Bay has to be close to the best cruising grounds in the world. There are lots and lots of places to go and plenty of good publications to tell you about them. I know people who have spent years exploring it all, and still have lots of places left to go. Friendly boaters, too. Even when you pull into a slip next to a retired couple on a trawler, they smile at the rumble of big-blocks. The only problem is that at SOME point, we're going to have to do laundry - just not enough room on board.
 |
C_Spray
Does she have a sister? Damn, I forgot, I’m married. Forget it…. |
Yep, but her sister is married. And doesn't care for boats.
"I'd rather be lucky than good." |
Could you just rent her out for a few hours:D ? Seriously , my wife's ok up to 50-55 mph , beyond that there is a 10 second rule:rolleyes: WOT for no more that 10 seconds:( . She's not real crazy about having to hang on. Your right C Spray the Chesapeake is really great , I usually try to get down that way once a month.
|
I cruised from Shellburne Nova Soctia to Dana Florida on the Gentry Trans Atlantic boat.
|
the Gentry boat? now thats a serious cruisin missle:) How much fuel for that trip?
|
Mika, I'm not sure what the total consumption was. We did stop in New York, and put 5000 galons in it.
|
I certainly won't complain about mine any more:D .
|
the longest trip i ever took in a boat was in 1989 during an attempted record run on the mississippi river.1036 miles from new orleans to st.louis in just under 24 hours,in a 22 donzi classic.i would love to make that trip again at a more comfortable cruising speed.
|

I Did the BOATING MAGAZINE Cannonball run in '95. Miami Beach to the North Cove Yacht Club in NYC, 2 1/2 days. We were the only off the shelf boat to finish.
