Another European boat... |
Hi Peter,
Like the look of that little boat. The colours are brazen but this is a fleet and minimalist thirty footer, not a four engine 55'+ offshore racer. Suspect detractors have overlooked this aspect. Think conversion to fly-by-wire is imminent ..got the non-contact sensor we need working really well this weekend. We will need to trial this for awhile to ensure suited reliability but I have no reasons to see that the mods we have made will cause any problems. For those that are not familiar with Peter's intention with the fly-by-wire steering system, these are the benefits: - Greatly reduced weight. - Accurate control of the drive angle(s) based on wheel position. - Very power efficient hydraulics which only demands pressure & flow when it is needed. - Redundancy on primary sensors as used on aircraft and safety critical automotive control systems. - Reduced steering sensitivity at speed. This can be under helm control or automated using a combination of engine loading and gps signal. - Under loom or electronics failure the system will self diagnose and shut down with completely predefined behaviour (this should not occur with a well designed electrical installation). There will also be overides that allow the vessel to then be controlled. - Ability to offset steering with the wheel centered to allow hands off-operation with sidewind loading. I'd also like to add the following features but will need to demo and convince Peter first: - gyro referenced steering at lower speeds so the craft compensates fom wander, wind gusts and oblique head seas with no helm attention. - a swithchable mode to predefined safe control envelope to allow inexperienced drivers to helm with complete safety up to speeds of around 45kts (both of these features I've implemented and fully tested before on an earlier project). Hope you and Carolyn are enjoying Miami, Peter. Yesterday we had heavy wet snow for most of the day here on the south coast.. pfff |
