What's the Best Method of Removing Old Registration #'s from Hull?

I bought a new to me boat from out of state and will have to change the registration number. What is the safest/best way to remove the letters from the hull? Heat gun? Goof off? Let me know what worked best for you...thanks.

Rubbing alcohol will work, it's slow but doesn't hurt anything.

I use my wife's hair dryer, with a plastic window ice scraper. A heat gun is to hot.

3M Eraser wheel. You can buy one at your local body shop supply place.

Goo gone might work?

If the numbers are self adhesive and the hull is straight gelcoat, heat them up with a hair drier and peel them off. Any remaining adhesive can be removed with Acetone. If the hull is painted, you can still use the hair drier, but use citrus cleaner to remove the adhesive.

If the numbers are painted on, use Easy Off Oven Cleaner.

Are they vinyl? If so, a little heat and a scraper to get the edge up then heat and peel. Acetone for the remaining residue and some wax afterwards.

Another...... Wet sand & buff :thankyouthankyou:

As already said, heat and peel, then acetone and you should be good to go. if they have been on a long time a good polish helps get rid of the shadow where there were in the gel.

Acetone is my wonder product, rub marks etc. Clean and wax afterward though.

eraser wheel...it can be used on gel or paint..... If it is faded around the numbers wet sand and buff and pray it gets it all out...what ever you do don't sit on your boat and drink and look at it from all angles... Cuz u will prob always see it a little bit.

Take it to Vincents and Repaint Boat!
You cant go wrong.

grads2112 10-10-2012 06:19 PM

If the numbers are painted on and the boat is not painted, Easy Off oven cleaner works the best. I know it sounds strange and I thought it was crazy the first time I heard about it but it works great. Took me all of about 15 minutes to remove mine earlier this year.

Scabby Jack 10-10-2012 07:06 PM

They are vinyl so it shouldn't be too bad. Heat, scrape, acetone, then apply the new ones.
