525s with manifolds

I know this subject has been beaten to death. I've done every search imaginable and have read extensively on the 525s with headers. The cracking, the internal problems created from it. I've posted a thread in the fountain forum a few months back. My dream boat is a 38 lightning staggered. Hence my 525 questions.

I'm curious if anyone has done the manifolds on thier 525s?

The stainless marine ones and redrilled heads?
Read of ke manifolds, can't seem to find them if they are a direct replacement.

When I buy the boat I'm not willing to drop a motor of some exhaust. Reliability beats bling!!

I understand the idea of pressure checking the headers and am ok with that except what if I pressure check them and put them on and they crack very next run. Simply put just checking them only insures not currently failed not protection for impending failure.

I want a 2007 or newer when I buy.

So anyone with manifolds on the 525?

seach cmi exhaust,,,i did see a pic of 525,s with stainless marine manifolds on them,,

Crude Intentions 10-17-2012 02:38 AM

Saw that pic, it's on their website. Just curious if any members have switched exhausts and what they went with. Also if they are problem free now.

TWIN-SPINS 10-17-2012 02:56 AM

i switched to the cp preformance headers,,hurricane http://www.cpperformance.com/c-412-h...tems.aspxlites second year with them ,no problems so far

Doesn't Cmi make a replacement now? Built to there own specs not mercury's. I believe stellings makes a 525 replacement header as well.

Crude Intentions 10-17-2012 07:54 AM

I appreciate all te responses.

Now has anyone replaced theirs? Who did you use? Happy? How long have they been on?

Mastercraft240 10-17-2012 08:59 AM

A friend has stellings on a set of 525's..... jesus christ does it sound good. Just be prepared to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

is stelling still in business?

I've seen Stainless marine on a set of 600sci's. Much lighter and perform well. These are on a Doug Wright 40 cat

I was told buy a CMI rep. That the water issue with my friends 38 fountain stg.525 boat was not cracked headers that had been checked and no problems found. But where fountain had put the dumps to the silent choice in the tail pipes was to close to the collector. But the first set of headers did have cracks after 250 hrs. And one tail pipe was not welded in one spot inside.

FIXX 10-17-2012 04:37 PM

the only cmi i would put on my boat would be the old split tubes,,all the newer cmi's are like tin foil compared to stellings and lightening /hardin marines which would be my choice..stellings i think will still make you a set if you ask..
just sayin..

While I have never done it I did talk to Stainless Marine about doing it. They have a jig that the let you use with deposit you then re drill the heads for the different bolt pattern. Then you are done if I ever get a 525 boat the headers will be gone its just to much risk. I was also told by Stainless that there is very little if any HP loss.

I don't know how you give up the sound of a true header vs a manifold. The raspiness, idle, everything just sounds better!

Why not buy a pair of cmi headers direct, built to better standard than the merc spec and sell off your old ones? Keep the bling and the sound!

cus he doesnt like the sound of water in his engine

Yup, it is a sicking sound when you are cranking and it just stops.

I won't lie. Read so many horror stories I'm petrified of the 525 headers. Lol

I know there will always be somebody bigger and faster an louder. I just want to be able to enjoy my boat by dealing with the other millions of problems a boat has not losing a motor to a faulty header.

I've heard of the silent choice thing and read its only recommended at Idle I would only use it at night in or out of my house.

Just doing as much research as I can.

I certainly appreciate everyone's input.

Call Dana Marine, I was told they made a template for around $375 that will allow you to use any header you want. I'm curious to know if they ever came out with the product.

tcal 10-18-2012 03:23 PM

talked to cmi yesterday they have headers that have both bolt patterns he said merc 525 where propriatary bolt patterns but that make the 525 e tops with both bolt patterns:evilb:

Got Cigs 10-18-2012 04:04 PM

Merc's 500hp's use manifolds, do they have same bolt pattern as the 525? Just throwing it out there, im no expert.

Dave M 10-18-2012 04:32 PM

I'll be watching this thread. I'm considering the Stainless Marine system too. I have 206 hrs. on my 2005 model 525efi. So far so good, but I am always thinking about this issue.
