Default Now for the bad news.......

The "horse collar" part of my bravo is cracked. 3 places. Shot. Noticed my steering was WAY sloppy this weekend. Sure enough, this is why. So, how hard is it to replace this part? How expensive? I'm broke from fixing the boat and the truck the last two months so I'm looking to get out of this the cheapest way possible. Either that or I'm done boating for the season.

Do you mean the gimbal ring?. Wow, where's it broke? It's not that bad but getting the steering arm off usually means pulling the engine unless your gimbal housing is already drilled with the plugs to get at the steering arm nuts. Bummer.

The bad news is there was a used one on ebay a while ago that went cheap. The new ones are $650 or so.

Try and find someone who has replaced it because of slop between the square and the steeing shaft. If they kept their old one, get it, Ive had lots of luck reconditioning them.

Tinker, it's cracked in three places at the top near the U-bolt that we tightened up when we put my motor in out in Jamestown.

Mike,
You are one lucky guy!!! Out there buzzin around like you were and that thing didnt let go.. I would say count your blessings and open a home equity loan..

Like formula said, find one that is sloppy and you can shim it if it isnt too bad..

I got two from Sterndrive spec on this board. He has them for 400.00 ea.

I have changed several of these year and if you don`t mind drilling holes it isn`t too bad. GHRkits.com has a really cool wrench that saves several hours off the job.

Kurt.

That might have been part of the reason why it was SOO loose.
