Funny...yesterday on the way back from Key West, we were passed by a 40 Skater in 3-4 footers. Granted, BOTH of us were running conservatively, 45-50 mph for us, and they were both PURELY pleasure boats (well, my boat has a cabin, anyway...the Skater is a BIT more purposed built! Lol). About 5 miles later, things got BAD. As in 6-8 foot bad...wind blown chop on top of tidal swells. Pat from Active Thunder was driving my boat, and we watched that Skater come right back to us, getting beat to hell while we drove right by. Now, I am not NEARLY stupid enough to think that my boat with 525s could come even CLOSE to a Skater in virtually any condition...but something to consider in this little Onion run (for the betting crowd) is the comfort of the crew. I'd MUCH rather be standing (like my crew was yesterday) than sitting down and getting pounded. Ostensibly...neither of you guys are "racers," so this could hash out differently than I had initially considered (I was in the Skater camp...now I've got second thoughts).
Also...I've got the whole passing thing on GoPro...will edit and post! Don't know whose Skater it was...all silver...but it was a GORGEOUS boat...

Is this the key? In bigger water the vees can still be resonably comfortable cruising at 85-90. Where as the cats need to be packing some air, 100-110? Otherwise that big flat bottom is gettin slapped pretty hard. Can they keep the drives in the water long enough and are the cahounies large enough to keep it there?

I suspect a race Fountain or similar isn't the same type of ride as an Apache?

You are right it was not an Apache, it was a Hustler, not as deep of a V, or near as heavy.
But the difference was huge.
As one of my friends pointed out, you dont see the old guys with all the money racing the V's.
