I assume that donating to the Red Cross is probably the best way for the rest of the country to help. Thoughts?

I talked to an older guy from Point Pleasant yesterday who has significant damage to his waterfront home. He is just staying in Florida for the winter, not trying to do anything with his house. He is in his 70's, has a brand new 4mm house here and I don't think he wants to spend 2 years of his life trying to get his NJ home rebuilt. I wonder how many folks will simply take the insurance check and bulldoze the house without rebuilding, due to the hassle/expense......

I had said the same thing to my dad on Monday. He just got to his house yesterday, to find there had been about a foot and a half of seawater in there. It's now full of mud. He'd been hinting at moving a bit south for a couple of years now. Use this as an opportunity. Take the insurance money and find a place he likes, and enjoy himself. He doesn't need to spend the next 2 years on a project that'll be nothing but frustration.

Tim, as always, thanks for all the pics.....

Don't take this post as me being anti union
Far from it

But those people that are turning away help from anyone right now are making a stupid decision.

There is a time and place to stand for the rights and principles that you believe in.
And while people are suffering common sense should prevail

I know that Alabama Power had a lot of crews rolling up that way even before the storm hit. I will check into this about being turned away. Unfortunately we (Alabamians) have a lot of experience with hurricane revcovery. It would be a shame not to take advantage of that.

With only a ft of water in the house, probably only going to get paid to do the repairs, not a total loss.

This happened a whole lot after Katrina in the New Orleans area, some people sold their gutted homes for dirt cheap which you can imagine will bring into your neighborhoods and some sold their properties to the government which led to them being torn down. It's a very frustrating time for the people that rebuild and your neighbor or neighbors don't and you're stuck living next to or in the same vicinity of gutted homes sitting empty. I'm sure you all will have lots of this happening where some of you live
