how much is a 454 worth?

I have a 2 bolt main 330hp 454 with around 300 hours on it. How much is it worth as a long block? It has large oval heads and has been bored .020 over.

dyno 07-16-2002 11:56 AM

I might be interested if the price is right.....I need a short block

puder 07-16-2002 11:58 AM

i already have somebody interested in it. I need to know how much is a fair price for it!!!!

The longer its sits in my garage the more appealing a BBC honda civic sounds........

Jayl13 07-16-2002 12:03 PM

It has a 2 bolt main?????
Both of my 330's were 4 bolt main blocks
You sure Puder?
does not sound right at all.

unless it has 2 invisible bolts next to ethvisible ones, its a 2 bolt main block.

1987 454 "mag" AKA bone stock 330 but it does have the large ovals heads.

Chris288 07-16-2002 12:12 PM

Since were on this subject ???

I have a 96 454 300hp carbed and was under the impression that I had two bolt mains. But after purchasing Dennis Moore's big block book, it would appear that I have four bolt mains..

Should I also assume that I definitely have cast pistons and a cast crank ??

Jay-son, I was really hoping you would get your motors dyno-ed, so I could do the same thing you did you to your motors to mine.

I am on the fence about modifying my current motor or going with a crate or used turn key, and then sell my current motor for hopefully 1,500 - 2,000

I'm basically looking for minimum of 425hp..

Jayl13 07-16-2002 12:19 PM

Yo bro!!!!
Mine were easy to do
No dyno sheet but approximately 480-490 HP
4 bolt main block
punched .030 over
New 9.5:1 pistons
new crane cam and lifters, double roller chain
Heads large oval ported and polished and port matched to the performer intakes. (subsequently intakes were ported a minor bit to match heads)
and dry exhaust
why go extra mile to get a whole long block when you have a good one right in front of you?
Granted easier, yank one, and dump in new one and your boating again, I get that part, but if you do it in the fall, just take yours out, send it out, let engine place have it for a few months and can work on it at their leisure
early spring, dump it back in and your ready to rock
Just a suggestion
Jason

I'm thinking $800. Yea, it's not much, but nobody wants 454's, much less a 2 bolt 330. You may actually have better luck selling it on e-bay or one of the drag race sites. There a 454-even a two bolt is pretty hot stuff.

Chris288 07-16-2002 12:32 PM

Jay,,,

Well, thats the plan right now, just wasn't sure the cast crank could handle 5,000 rpm's.

I was thinking of going with cam, heads, pistons, intake, carb, and whatever I end up with than so be it.

Just wanna do things RIGHT !!! so no problems down the road..

Hot-boat said he would help me pull the motor in the fall and put it back in the spring. I want to start getting opinions on heads, cam, pistons, valves, carb, so I can be sure of what i'll be doing in the fall..

Chris288 07-16-2002 12:34 PM

ooops, forgot, one other thing...

THe exhaust,,,, I thought my stock exhaust would be o.k. to 425-450 hp ??. If not thats going to add A LOT to the cost..

What did it end up costing you per motor ??, remember I only need to do one..

puder 07-16-2002 12:39 PM

cord,

its a drag race guys thats interested in it. I figure it woudlbe worth more to them. That is basic stuff for boating but HUGE cubes for 1/4 milers.

Jayl13 07-16-2002 12:50 PM

Mine to get redone cost me each engine the following
2200 each engine
PLUS
Price of cam and lifters,
Price of intake manifold
Price of new manifolds and risers
Price of welding in custom dry pipes into my new stainless risers
Price of timing chain covers
Price of new valve covers

Engine builder got me the heads and I left my old peanut round toilet heads with him (did not even care to take them home)
He paid and installed the new valves, guides, seals, springs, retainers, bearings, double roller timing chains and gears, new pistons, rings, all machine work and both reassembled and cleaned (glass beaded all old parts like thermostat housings, balancer, pulleys ect ect ect)

(guess you went to engine section and saw my hooker barbie pink engines yes????)
Rough pricing on the items listed above are
Intakes = 150 +shipping each (yes polished)
Chrome junk =100+shipping
Exhaust = 630+shipping
Exhaust pipes chrome and inner dry pipes = 140 +tax
Misc stuff like 8 riser gaskets and all new bolts and stuff like that you never figure on but you end up buying it
Bought 2 new oil coolers/PS coolers also from BAM
It adds up quick but with just under 1000 HP ill be able to sell it for a half way decent amount cause I have never ever seen a 280 Baja any year with this much HP and attention to detail as mine (especially after I paint it this fall or next spring)
all in all, I probalby have about total each engine 4500 -5000
but over time you can deal with it, if you do it all at once you get wacked hard
I bought the intakes and other misc stuff over the winter time and spread the cost out so it was not that much of an anal slam all at once
You know the drill
Jason
PS pulling engine out with fork lift was a breeze, cherry picker might be real tough!!!

The cast crank will handle 450hp without a problem. I ran one on a stock 330 and 174 B&M.....475hp @ 5200 rpms for almost 3 seasons.

pachangalpina 07-16-2002 03:03 PM

I recently sold my '89 330 long block with 270 hours to a local marina for $1500. I included the iron intake and exhaust manifolds that needed to be surfaced. Also included the flywheel valve covers and oil pan.

Most MKIV 330 engines were 2 bolt main (good to 600hp with cast crank in drag cars). I beleive that all Gen5 & 6 engines came with 4 bolt main and some came with cast cranks as well (Gen5 was introduced in '92 in think)

I dont know about what year what mains came on what but
Mine is 1990 twin 330's peanut heads and 4 bolt mains
cast crank, cast pistons
(replaced now but stock setup)
Gen IV block
