First, my prayers to your friend Kook. Secondly, I hope there is someone there talking to him and letting him know who he is when he wakes up. Third, Kook I think you did all you could.

MY .02 I have had several experances loosing/ damaging gimbals lower units breaking cases of lower units props, out boards jumping up into the boat with lower halfs gone. My bet is you hit something submurged or partly so.

audacity,
i was actually going to post this as a new thread but i guess here is as good as any. what do you think caused the lower unit to come off like that? this was mercury’s new SC i thought it was suppose to stronger than the brovo 1 (or is that just the internals). my first thought was that when the boat landed sidewise it broke off from the side impact of the water, even that doesn’t make a lot of sense. but then i saw the swim platform and it looks like it was bent up in the center some? you’ve probably seen this before, any insight or theories? any one?

truth be known...there are several things that are very suspect in they way this boat was rigged and run for that matter...for top end #'s only....from past threads of kook's, he has had problems chine walking and other handling issues?? think about this....an f1 boat does 80+ all day...27+ foot boat.weighs more..500 hp that run forever and i've seen them STOMP the **** out of 100mph big boats in rough water!!! ya think they're set up right with people that know how to use every bit of 'em!!!!???

sun's swim platforms are like that on the 25's

I have a theory on that Dean. Drives are made to take force head on... as when underway. If Kook's boat was air born with the drive out of the water, and the boat turned 90 degrees, upon re-entry of the drive sideways to direction of travel (inertia), the 3-4 bolts (1/2 the bolts) that would hold the drive on would snap like pencils under the tensile load. One could calculate the force at the moment arm between the skeg and the mounting surface between upper and lower to figure the force, but suffice it to say it was high. Good thing they broke! I'd hate to think of what would happen if they were stronger. A drive traveling sideways is bound to cause something above it to rotate (ie. barrel roll) in an unpleasant manner.

To much physics for me... 75mph is smokin fast on water!!!!

I think a different thread is a good idea.

mcollinstn, First off I put a question mark after "kook flipped his boat?" also I said I "heard" what happened twice in my post. You don't know me so don't judge me or tell me what to say. The reason I added some comments about speed and inexprience is because I also wrecked my boat a few years ago and my brother (R Addication) almost died and was in the hospital for two weeks and out of work for 6 months plus my other friends and my self all ended up in the hospital with serious injurys. I did the same thing as kook, just put in big power 2 days before and was running flat out and loose, inexprienced, and hit a big wave, shut up to the moon, the boat turned in the air and landed on it's side and everyone except me flew out of the boat and went under water for a long while.Lucky my one friend came to the surface and was waiting there when he felt somthing by his foot and it was my brother and he was knocked out and going down , and he went down and pulled him up and saved his life. I am sorry this has happened to kook and i hope his friend gets better but I just want people to respect that power and be safe, there has been too many accidents this year already!
