First, my prayers to your friend Kook. Secondly, I hope there is someone there talking to him and letting him know who he is when he wakes up. Third, Kook I think you did all you could.
MY .02 I have had several experances loosing/ damaging gimbals lower units breaking cases of lower units props, out boards jumping up into the boat with lower halfs gone. My bet is you hit something submurged or partly so. form owner of 2001 Agressor Every one give a thought and prayer to Kooks friend before bed tonight!!!!!! |
WHAT?!!!!...did you even look at the pics???
"Third, Kook I think you did all you could" WHAT??? ... you know what????....ask kook....i bet his tune has changed in one way or another??? |
audacity,
i was actually going to post this as a new thread but i guess here is as good as any. what do you think caused the lower unit to come off like that? this was mercury’s new SC i thought it was suppose to stronger than the brovo 1 (or is that just the internals). my first thought was that when the boat landed sidewise it broke off from the side impact of the water, even that doesn’t make a lot of sense. but then i saw the swim platform and it looks like it was bent up in the center some? you’ve probably seen this before, any insight or theories? any one? http://standsononewheel.homestead.co...earQuarter.jpg http://standsononewheel.homestead.co...-_in_truck.jpg |
truth be known...there are several things that are very suspect in they way this boat was rigged and run for that matter...for top end #'s only....from past threads of kook's, he has had problems chine walking and other handling issues?? think about this....an f1 boat does 80+ all day...27+ foot boat.weighs more..500 hp that run forever and i've seen them STOMP the **** out of 100mph big boats in rough water!!! ya think they're set up right with people that know how to use every bit of 'em!!!!???
sun's swim platforms are like that on the 25's |
KOOK,
OUR PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FRIEND. PLEASE KEEP US INFORMED AS TO HIS RECOVERY. |
I have a theory on that Dean. Drives are made to take force head on... as when underway. If Kook's boat was air born with the drive out of the water, and the boat turned 90 degrees, upon re-entry of the drive sideways to direction of travel (inertia), the 3-4 bolts (1/2 the bolts) that would hold the drive on would snap like pencils under the tensile load. One could calculate the force at the moment arm between the skeg and the mounting surface between upper and lower to figure the force, but suffice it to say it was high. Good thing they broke! I'd hate to think of what would happen if they were stronger. A drive traveling sideways is bound to cause something above it to rotate (ie. barrel roll) in an unpleasant manner.
To much physics for me... 75mph is smokin fast on water!!!! BT  |
I think a different thread is a good idea.
|
mcollinstn, First off I put a question mark after "kook flipped his boat?" also I said I "heard" what happened twice in my post. You don't know me so don't judge me or tell me what to say. The reason I added some comments about speed and inexprience is because I also wrecked my boat a few years ago and my brother (R Addication) almost died and was in the hospital for two weeks and out of work for 6 months plus my other friends and my self all ended up in the hospital with serious injurys. I did the same thing as kook, just put in big power 2 days before and was running flat out and loose, inexprienced, and hit a big wave, shut up to the moon, the boat turned in the air and landed on it's side and everyone except me flew out of the boat and went under water for a long while.Lucky my one friend came to the surface and was waiting there when he felt somthing by his foot and it was my brother and he was knocked out and going down , and he went down and pulled him up and saved his life. I am sorry this has happened to kook and i hope his friend gets better but I just want people to respect that power and be safe, there has been too many accidents this year already!
|
hate to hear it kook. hope you and your friend fully recover.
|
Ditto eyezlee said.
Everything will work out. Caleb |
Sorry to hear this Kook, take a deep breath and hang in there man..........Doug.
|
I think the true tragety here has been lost. Kook has a buddy down right now, and all of the boating knowledge in the world will not change that. "Support", frankly I think a few of you are just *******s, waiting for a chance to show the world how smart you think you are. Kook my best friend just had his brother die in a motorcycle accident that was his fault. Does that change what is now reality, NO. We must be a support group, not a bunch of " I knew its, and I told you so's" This thread has turned to total Bull****. Kook- My group supports your spitual needs 100%, I do not care what anyone thinks, at this point it does not matter. Midnight:cool:

@#$% an A right MIdnightRider!!!!
@#$% an A right. I could not agree with you more!!!!!!!! I wish some of these arrogant folks would step back and think about this happening to them. I tried, I tried; to clean this up on the first page. |
Hey Kook,
Your friend will come out of this fine, with all our hopes and prayers. If there is one thing that may come out of this accident, will be a new awareness of the dangers we all face at WOT! Maybe this awareness will save a life or an injury this summer for some of us. I for one will be remembering this thread next time I am out with my 14 year old son screaming along! Good luck to you both! |
Kook,
I was racing a guy that got throw out of his boat at 75. He and his girl friend were beat up real bad. I felt like **** for a long time but the guy said we were out just having a frindly race. He and his girl friend recovered fully and just recently we went out to dinner to talk about how lucky we were. I hope you and your friend get to go out to dinner. Roger |
Ike,
Since this thread belongs to you, and my comments are directed at you, I will include this post here rather than starting a new thread. This will be my last post in this thread since as others have pointed out, the thread is going nuts. I'm probably the worst abuser of rambling on details of questionable value but we are who we are, eh? If you're feeling guilty about your comments, then deal with it. For some reason you feel it is necessary to defend them. Sure, you said "I heard" twice in the original post. That is why I think you earned a couple of grace points in there. It was your next sentence that I am critical of: << I thought that boat looked a little small for that kind of power and speed and inexperience.>> Also in your next post you do it again: << Brian,Eyewitness said he was driving very reckless all day, people need to know and learn to slow down!!! >> I stand by Sydwayz's immediate offense to those comments. I feel that they were misplaced and presumptuous. Secondly, you're right. I don't know you. I only know what you write. Because of that, I have no ability to judge you - only the ability to judge what you write, which I have done. You are also right in that I have no right to tell you what to say. Didn't think I told you what to say. Here's the quote: << You GOTTA be sure to make it clear that you are only reporting what you have HEARD, and not making judgements. >> As far as what has happened to you in the past regarding overpowered boats and such, how does that make it any more "okay" for you to tell all of us that Kook was: a) inexperienced b) needing to know and learn to slow down and inferring that he was driving recklessly? I, and I assume everybody else on the board, appreciates your early report of Kook's mishap. Nobody expects the early details to be perfect. I still feel, however, that your criticism of his inexperience and comments about small boats and too much power were misplaced and should have waited until more news was confirmed. As far as your own personal catastrophe, I'm very happy that you and your passengers recovered from the event. If you were Kook, and He had written that you were inexperienced, I would be trying to take up for you and would be critical of Kook's comments. If you would care to continue the discussion, I prefer to do so in a new thread. ************************************************** ***** Kook Hope things are improving. I know you will report when you have news. As far as your boat/motor, listen to your heart and do what YOU think you should do. Unless you have a reason to rush, let the big decisions wait. M |
Kook, very sorry to hear of your accident. Hope your friend has a speedy recovery.
|
Kook,
I hope your friend comes through and that you are not beating yourself up. Forget about the "what ifs" as well as what others are saying. To those of you who are questioning anything of Kook, take the stuff elsewhere right now. This is not about "you". It is about Kook and his friend right now. Take care and stay positive. |
Kook,
I've been away a day or so and just learned of your accident. It saddens me deeply to learn of your friends injury. Lets hope that with good care, he will recover fully. Like Advantage Rob said, 75 MPH is not unusual for this hull. It's so much fun, thats why we do it. The cause of the accident is academic now, and the main concern is for your friend. Please keep us posted on his progress, and try to keep your spirits up. Larry |
Kook hang in there, For those of you who don't think 75 is fast then on your way home tonight stick you head out the window of your car on the highway. Speed must be respected.

Since someone else opened the flood gates............
When someone has just had a brush with death, watched a friend get hurt to the point of being a twitching mass of tubes in the hospital, crashed his prize posession....etc etc.... Put yourself in that place. What do you think YOU would want to hear? How about a few of these quotes right out of the posts?? "I thought that boat looked a little small for that kind of power and speed and inexperience." " More than DOUBLING the horsepower on ANY boat is not a good idea. Accidents happen, this sounds like a bound to happen." "I considered that boat as over-powered." "I hope other 25 Sunsation owners are taking a good look at what happened here and think twice about adding heavy power to these boats. " "truth be known...there are several things that are very suspect in they way this boat was rigged and run for that matter...for top end #'s only....from past threads of kook's, he has had problems chine walking and other handling issues??" WTF?? I don't care who you are. I don't care if you like what I have said or not. The comments above had no place in this thread. They did nothing to help the situation or ease the pain. Since there is talk about "learning something" from this, how about if people "learn" to have a little more compassion and empathy toward others! |
Well Said ;)

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.......hindsight 20/20, etc....... I run these things over and over and over in my head. Things maybe I shoulda done differently......... But AT THE TIME, I felt in control and I felt like I was driving the boat the "right way" for the conditions that lay in front of me. All previous instability experiences were preceded by ample warning signs, giving me plenty of time to "correct" (throttle back some, trim down a tad, etc..). This was different, and dare I say that "since I hadn't a hint that it was going to happen, it was bound to happen sometime....... sooner or later".
75 mph may not sound fast, but in a 25' boat with a 7'3" beam, it's cruisin' along at a pretty good clip. I've been in much larger boats at speeds approaching 100mph - totally different feel - 100mph in a 30-some foot boat feels like 70mph in a 25' boat. It's all relative. Nontheless, 75mph down to 0 mph in under a second is quite a slowdown. My buddy is making slow, but steady progress. He began moving around too much, so he is now restrained and more heavily sedated. An opthamologist examined his eyes and said that he will have vision, but uncertain how much. Can't ask for anything more in 6 days time - he's way ahead of where the Docs thought he would be. All the payers, visitors, and his hard headedness seem to be working! I know he will be the same again. Just gonna take lotsa time and effort. Thanks again to all you out there on the Board :) |
Good news kook, Im relieved that things are moving in a positive direction for you.
Chris |
This thread certainly isn't about, shoulda, coulda, woulda's,,,,
its about Kook and his friends recovery.

Glad to hear your amigo is making progress. Keep up the faith.

I am happy to hear the progress of your freind. My thoughts and prayers are with him.
|
Good News Kook!! Keep up the positive thoughts! :D
|
Hang in there!
Kook:
I don't know you I but feel your pain. My brother was seriously injured in my F1 boat back in 1999. He broke his back in 5 places while we were jumping waves in the inlet @ Daytona Beach. Me and my mom had to push his morphin button every 7 minutes for almost 12 hours and then he caught pnumonia, he damn neared died. We were only going about 20 mph and who would of thought that would of happened? My brother has some pain but is walking and carrying on his life. Do not blame yourself for a second. Stay by your friends side, keep your girlfriend close and keep your chin up! Brian Hollis Driver # P3-96 PowerBoatTours.com |
Glad to hear he's doing better,
Prayers are with you and Him. Good Luck, Caleb |
I'm glad your friend is doing better. Reports from qualified sources, actually my employee who was on the river that day, say that your boat was chine walking up and down the river, most all of the time. Bigger ain't always better. Don't forget, torque is not your friend in a single engine application, especially big cubes.

Recovery...
Originally posted by DanL .... Don't forget, torque is not your friend in a single engine application.... #1: I feel for you, and hope that you, your friend, and your equipment all come back to full strength, and that boating remains an enjoyable pasttime for you. I know from experience that you will probably never completely shake off the memory of this, but I also know that you can use it to your advantage by taking an objective look back at it, as you seem to be doing. #2: (Please take this for what it's meant to be- a sincere offer to help you get your feet wet again.) I run a 28' boat with a 6' beam at speeds as high as 92 mph. This boat has a DPX drive, and the counter-rotating props really, really make for a nice ride. BajaBob38, Sharkey, DaveP, Shanghied Again, Shane, Miller and others have all been out on it and can give you the straight scoop. I'm over at Tome's Landing, so I'll give you a free demo in the boat so you can see for yourself. (We'll be using it in the Philly Poker Run on August 3rd, too.) If you're interested, when the time comes for you to put your boat together, I've got a bellhousing, gimbal, and drive that are yours for less than I'd sell them to anyone else. If you do sell your new engine, I've also got a nice 530 hp 502EFI to include in the package. Anyone else will have to pay more than you - you've paid enough already. #3: Free advice (including my post) is usually worth what you pay for it. Best wishes. |

Don't forget, torque is not your friend in a single engine application, especially big cubes. I'd be interested in speaking with your employee. The accident was on my third run up the river that day - wasn't pushing it to the limits near as hard or as long as on Friday. If I WAS doing a lot of chine walking on Saturday, then it must have started feeling second nature and I didn't even know it - that's about all I can make of that.  |
kook
It takes a very large human being to be so honest and open as you have been in discussing this situation with us. I am sure we all admire this. Remember- it is not how often that we fall down, but how often we get up. my thoughts & prayers are with you and your friend. Paul |
Kook,
1st and foremost......Our prayers are with you and your friend for a speedy and full recovery. 2nd....Thanks for telling the board what happened. Your experience has given many OSO members something to think about next time were out and hopefully we all become a little bit more aware. No matter how well prepared you are, accidents can and do happen. I know it isn't easy but please try not to beat yourself up over this. take care, Keith |
