Lower Unit Drive Lube washer
Anyone use anything besides that crappy blue fiber washer?
If I used an o-ring or something would that work better or does the pressure in the case cause it to leak? |
One of the great outdrive debates. It seems like they are always coming out with a new mousetrap for that one.
I've used the red fiber ones, the blue fiber ones, and the yellow/plastic ones. I tend to like the yellow/plastic ones more than the others. However, the best practice is a new washer everytime you remove the plugs. |

Like Brian said, I keep plenty of the blue ones on hand and use a new one every time. I ordered these awhile back from somewhere (can't remember where) that use an allen wrench and have an o-ring. Didn't like how thin they are where the o-ring seats so never used them.

Visit an Evinrude Dealer
The white plastic washers that Evinrude uses last forever and are the same size as the crummy fiber washers Merc uses.

I'll be the first to admit that part of my problem is that I have never used new ones (so they are at LEAST 6 season's old).
I might try the Evinrude ones............. |
I think I have a bag of these in my work shop. Give me an address and as long as they are still there I will put a couple in the mail for you. Merry Xmas!

Having the correct screwdriver makes a big difference on tightening the screw,i took a black snapon with the black square drive blabe apart and cut 6'' off it and hammered it back in the handle..works like a champ and i onlt use that one out that screw on the outdrives..
