So I guess Im a lurker

I guess it's time I finally officially introduce myself. My names Mickey and I have a boating problem... Wait wrong type of forum...

I would consider myself a lurker, I live in Pasadena md and boat the Chesapeake and all the rivers attached to it. I've been reading Oso since 2004 when I had my first bow rider but never really took the effort to make a profile as I just browsed the pages estonished at everyone's nice rides. Sold the old boat in 2009 and was just bumming boat rides from friends not sure what direction I wanted to go. I started looking for a project boat in mid 2011 and finally found one that fit what I wanted to spend on it but be able to make it how I wanted. Started building in. March 2012 and completed it right before Memorial Day 2012. Had nothing but problems in 2012 with it but got most of the kinks worked out just in time to grenade the 2nd motor of the season late August 2012.

The boat is an 87 Baja sport 240 started life as a dreaded 7.4/alpha combo and that lasted about 15 hrs before the motor let loose. It had semi low oil pressure so I kind of expected it not to last long but I digress. So in early June the motor popped and I jumped on a complete 454 mag/b1 setup that I was able to rig and had it back in the water July 4th. Motor and drive had low low hours and ran like an absolute top for 30 hours. End of August the oil cooler cracked internally and injested 3 gallons of water very quickly ( I checked the oil at the dock, it was perfect. Went to dinner 35 minute cruise, checked oil before we left to cruise home it was still perfect. Cruising 3500 rpm about 10 minutes from the house and it locked up tight) pulled the motor and the entire oil pan was filled with water) Anyways it was a bummer but stuff happens so I packed it in for the season, and came across a screaming deal on a slightly worked 454 MPI mag motor that's 60 over and has lightning headers remapped roller motor that i personally know the history of the motor that I'm going to be installing in the spring.

Ultimately I'd love to have a larger boat and I think the mpi motor would help on the sale when the time comes and give me some reliable power for the time being. Also while its under the knife I have a full hydraulic steering upgrade and a set of Dana marine trim tabs to add. It's definitely not the nicest rig but I'm pretty proud of the way it turned out for now.

Thanks for letting me ramble. Here are some pics before and after. I hope I linked it right and if anyone knows this boat please let me know. It came originally from Ohio (shocker for a Baja right?) and then sold to a guy in Pasadena md. He moved with it to Delaware and when I bought it I brought it back to the dena

Cool boat and nice perseverance! I love those boats. Such solid fun time things that'll take a beating and big water and keep going. Welcome to OSO

Couldn't help but laugh at your story, probably because I feel your pain with bad engine luck! :angry-smiley-055: Great job on the boat, looks sweet,

That boat looks awesome.

Thank you very much for all the compliments. You have to take all the bad luck like a grain of salt espically in the boating world. Because you know that S happens.

And as far as cringing at the motor picture I keep the broken part of the piston in my work truck just as a conversation piece.

And if anyone was wondering black isn't the best interior color choice but I think it helped complete the interior scheme. I do all of my own work with the exception of the interior stiching. I rebuilt all the frames and A life long friend does it on the side so he helped me out with that.

WOW! That is a super nice setup that you SHOULD be proud to show off and enjoy. Very clean. Good choice on the steering upgrade. You will also like the new Mag Mpi.

Thanks for sharing

Welcome to OSO, Your boat looks good. There is one the same color that has been sitting in my neck of the woods for a few years, like the boat but have never seen it in the water. By the looks of yours this person should sell it so someone like yourself can fix it up & use it. Randy

Nice looking ride! Great decision adding the hydraulic steering. The number 1 best upgrade that I ever did.

It also appears that the vinyl paint adhered good ad took some abuse. I did an interior with it years ago and I was surprised how good it held up.

mickeymcclgn 01-09-2013 08:12 PM

You caught me its really Jim Darr and I'm only towing it with a 3/4 ton so it's getting ready to drag me off the road with every passing truck.

In all seriousness though thanks for the warm welcome and I haven't seen but Afew in the same paint scheme. At first I was turned off by the yellow but it grew on me slightly. Yes the vinyl paint held up to some serious abuse not by me but the previous owner liked to fix everything with drywall screws and vinyl paint. It was hideous. But I will say it makes the material hard as a rock.

Can't wait for the steering upgrade plus it adds some nice looking equipment to the back lol. I never had an issue with steering the boat but i know I needed it so it was a Christmas present to myself.
