Should have included that.
Going up boatless. If I can pay gas or what not 400 gallons $8/gallon Seriously, I think the best thing to do is to drive to Capt Rons. Pay $30 to get on the Celebration boats. They ferry you out on a pontoon. You can be on the big boat at the finish line. Beer is 1/2 the price as it is on shore. You can go back and forth to the docks as you please. Make sure to have a DD. |

If we go a stray to party we will cab or DD for sure, no questions asked. I hear ya on the fuel but depending the day (spending 4 days there) a fun run for a fair few hundred or whatever would be worth it I think being were boatless there and my GF loves the speed on the water. For the, main shootout day we will most likey do the large boat for the beers, party, and safety. |
You wont get a cabin at captain rons for the 2013 shootout there is a waiting list and the people that rent them get first chance on reserving it for the next year. Deepwater INN is about a half mile from rons and they run a shuttle back and forth for shootout weekend

Are there many places to watch from land and what do rooms go for a night for the shootout? This would be my first year going and would love some local input or people that have gone before.

As everybody said, DD it for sure if your drinking on land or water. Camden on the lake or condo close by for the party and night life. I live down by capt. Rons and it's a party there that weekend also. I would stay somewhere between even if I didn't have a boat, somewhere around the 20mm, there are plenty of condos to rent right on the water with great views. You will have cheaper cab rides both directions and see more of the lake and it's restaurants and bars!

Id Stay somewhere @ 20-22 MM on main channel as DonziBen said. It is fun to watch the boats run by in the nasty water when the shootout ends. My in-laws used to have a place on the channel, it was a good 2 hours of entertainment with drinks for my wife & I from 4:30-6:30 Saturday/Sunday. If not that choice, I'd do Camden. Get a DD as stated and enjoy LOTO!

IMO, you will have more fun if you stay at Camden on Lake. A lot more night life with Toad and Shady Gators right there. You can drive to Capt Ron's for the daytime stuff and party hard when you are walking distance from your hotel.
|
I also say camden for the party seen. Between the toad and shady gators it doesn't get much better. There will also be plenty of boats to catch a ride from if you are down to pay for gas.
