Ford Powerstroke Deisel

Hey guys I just thought I would relay this bit of info. I have a 1999 Ford PSD and the shifting on it was all over the place. I kept taking it back to the dealer and saying it was messed up and they would drive it and say it was fine. Well this last weekend I took the truck up to Maine and on the drive home about 2.5 hours the shifting got to be real hard and was chattering. Well they found the problem and there is aparently a bulliten on these transmisions. The problem started as when it would shift it seemed to not know what gear to go in. It would down shift then upshift then down shift then upshift a couple times before it would finally find it's gear. So far the new valve body and some other things they did seem to have solved the problem. Other then when I first left the dealer I have not had any bad shifting at all (probably just a airbuble or something). Just thought I would let you all know as when the first sign of problem (the up and down shifting) showed up the three dealers I took it to all said it was normal. The real test will be this weekend when I go back up to Maine!! :D:D

Thanks for the info. So far I haven't had any problems.

55000+ on my '99 F350 PSD and no problems so far, but thanks for the notice.

euby 07-19-2002 10:43 AM

Can you be more specific on what they did? Did they change the valve body or fix something in your old one and what kind of fluid did they put in it. I hope it wasn't Mercon V.

RCM255 07-19-2002 11:22 AM

i don't mean to thread tread but how do you guys like
your F250 PSD's. i found a 2000 with 23k miles on it for
29 thou. i was thinking about ditching my Bronco and picking
this up.

back on the subject i believe all trucks after the 99 model year
have the updated valve body from the factory

fred 07-19-2002 11:46 AM

I now have199,325 miles on my 1995 PowerStroke F-350 crew cab dually, pull a 15,000 lb. boat and trailer 100 miles one way to Lake Michigan at 70 mph in overdrive....I use only Amsoil trans fluid in it....keep on rockin transmission.........Fred

What is wrong with Mercon V? Was just wondering, cause you learn something new everyday. (and I haven't learned anything new yet today) :)

audacity 07-19-2002 11:56 AM

100k on my 2001...i NEVER change trany fluid.. but hey what do i know about transmissions anywho:rolleyes:

ps...thanks for the info...i'll check into that for ya next week....i may need some additional info from ya. i'll tell ya if the dealer was bs'n ya or not.

liquid lounge 07-19-2002 11:59 AM

Audio- OT, but have you done the $4.00 fuel line mod? Did it to mine with pretty nice results....will take you about 10 minutes. If there's any intrest, I'll post how to do it and why it works. To give credit where due, this malady was discovered by Mark Hutchins [Hutch] of F-D.com. Take Care All

audacity 07-19-2002 12:09 PM

post it man!...i really not up to date on any aftermarket stuff for these things...we just change strategies to get what we want power wise.

jr 07-19-2002 12:34 PM

Audacity, what about changing the tranny fluid in the auto's in the 150's. Some say yes others say no.

i say hell no...the clutches will slip more and the addition of a new detergent will bust up crap that will get hung up in the valve body...just my .02 ....

Neverfastenuf 07-19-2002 01:26 PM

Audio, was it the solenoid body and MLPs that was replaced. That is the most common "electrical" repair. We have done prbably 2500 E4OD and 4R100 solenoid bodies over the past years. Joey, you are right in the aspect that changing fluid will cause problems with a trans that has clutches and bands that are "varnished", but if your trans is healthy and you service it, you will have no problems. Problem is too many people believe a service will help a trans that has black, burned fluid, this is when problems arise. BTW, Joey, how are those new 6.0s coming. I want one of the new ones with the 5R100 but I think I'll wait for "YOU" guys to work out the bugs. Sam

audacity 07-19-2002 01:47 PM

ahhhh. working on one right now!!! BTW...the MLPs is our MOST MISSED diag. warranty issue we have....so we took it off the outside and put on the inside...it's just about the first thing a dealer will due,,,,due to time saved....kinda like our bad EEC's....when all it was, was the bolt not being toqued from the factory....oops.

Neverfastenuf 07-19-2002 01:56 PM

Joey, you guys don't EVER make mistakes like that do ya,LOL. I am hearing through my connections that the dealers are cracking down on transmission failures when chips and such are involved. I know 3 service mgrs. that are very good freinds that are saying it is getting difficult to push some of the warranties through. Drats, looks like the 125hp chip and propane will have to be used a little less now. On second thoughts naaaaaa.:D

audacity 07-19-2002 02:04 PM

man...i could tell ya.............LOL

fred 07-19-2002 02:12 PM

The company I work for just shipped the 6.0's cam drilling machine to them (international engine) I don't know when they start production,....Fred

Mickey Britain 07-19-2002 02:27 PM

Ford has a bad habbit of not putting on a big enuf trans cooler and it cost me 4500, the Ford dealer I took it to replaced the cooler with a larger one and we are still going strong:D :D :D

audacity 07-19-2002 02:28 PM

hummm....ok....i'll leave it at that.

u can make ASS LOADS of power with the new one...and it idles like a gas car.

audacity 07-19-2002 02:30 PM

it gets hot from the converter not locking...allow it to lock and then let it have it...the trans will last an amazingly long time!

euby 07-19-2002 02:37 PM

gmhdfan,
Mercon V is a big no no for the 4r100....its the only tranny ford makes that is suppose to have Mercon fluid due to friction issues. It says in all their TSB's and even in the manual in big bold letters not to use Mercon V or any dual rated fluid:confused: The problems is most dealers buy their fluids in bulk and will put in Mercon V because thats what they have on hand. Had it happen to me...took my ride in for service at the end of my warranty and had them flush and refill tranny (as per maintenance schedule)they put Mercon V in it and within 2,000 miles I had a smoked tranny:mad: Well ford put up the dime to put in R+R tranny and guess what they put in it Mercon V even though they just paid for that mistake once already. I took in 17qts of Amsoil to have them put that in and they told me if I did, it would void my new 2yr 20,000 mile warranty because it was a dual rated fluid (which means it meets the specs of mercon and mercon V). Can you believe that? I took it straight home and put it in anyway and my tranny temps dropped 30 degrees right off the bat.

Fred
The production line is firing up now.....they've produced the first few engines and have sent them off for testing. From what I've heard the new 6.0 is a monster engine with more HP and torque of the current PSD and so quiet you can't tell it's a deisel:D

liquid lounge 07-19-2002 02:49 PM

Pre- pump fuel line mod:

Parts:18" of 5/16" diesel rated fuel line and 4 hose clamps for fuel line. That's it. Available at NAPA, etc. for 4-5 dollars.

Procedure: Underneath truck, drivers side, about where footwell is, locate electric fuel pump sitting inside of frame rail. Remove quick connect fitting and hose from suction side of pump[the hose from pump to fuel tank]. Cut new hose to length and replace with hose clamps. Done. Most guys stretch hose over the small retainer collar and utilize 2 hose camps on pump end of hose, I just pushed mine up to the collar and used 1 hose clamp.

Why in the world would this do anything to help your truck run better?!! I was very skeptical at first, but now I'm a believer, you will be too if your truck is SUCKING AIR. It seemsthe quick connect fitting you have just tossed, while excellent as a positive pressure connection is less than ideal as a negative pressure connection allowing air to be pulled into the fuel system. This air entrained fuel can cause your truck to run louder, rougher, and inconsistent. I'm not saying all late model PSD's suffer from this, but my '01 did and I think many if not most will given enough time.

Give the fix a try....it's easy. Alot of people have re-done the fittings all the way to the fuel tank pick-up foot, reporting even more improvement. I'm not in the mood to drop my tank just yet, but I probably will in the near future and will post results. Take Care All - Berg

fred 07-19-2002 02:50 PM

We also built a V/6 crank-polisher for them, I hear those engines will be going in F-150's....they are supposed to put out a ton of power also, I don't recall what liter they are,....Fred

euby 07-19-2002 02:54 PM

audacity its real hard to do so you may not want to:D

go to your autoparts store and get about 12" of 5/16 deisel rated fuel line and two hose clamps. Then take the vitron fitting off the back of the fuel pump(little clip pulls out and the fitting pulls off) and where it goes to the hard line from your tank and replace with the new hose and clamps. You won't believe the difference:D That fitting on the back of the fuel pump sucks air and introduces it into your fuel which with the ford dead rail system gets forced through the injectors causing noise and injector damage:mad:

Once you get that done then its time to due the tank mods for the same reason... and then the regulator mods so you get better fuel delivery. ahhh hell ...go join www.Ford-deisel.com and read all about it:cool:

I've done all three pre-pump, in tank, and regulator and have gained about 3MPG, power response, and its so quiet I can order fast food without shutting the truck off:D

liquid lounge 07-19-2002 03:22 PM

Euby- What configuration did you use on your regulator mod? Seems like a new and improved way to do it comes out every day.
I met up with Dan LeBlanc aka "The Hammer" and he was running a dual circuit with CV's left in. To say the least, I was very impressed. Mine sounded like a Northern Alliance T-34 compared to his. I'm just waiting for the final "best" configuration to hit, then I will be doing mine. Take Care, Berg

Neverfastenuf 07-19-2002 03:38 PM

Troutly, your info on the PSD has always been spot on. I just tried to spec out a new 03 with 6.0 and they had that "deer in the headlight" look on their faces. I guess I'll have to talk to a dealer that knows!!!

Audiofn 07-19-2002 03:56 PM

I will try and get to the truck and give you more info later. I know they said they replaced the valve body and some other stuff. Good info on hear I am psyched I posted up as I now know of a fuel repair and also to make sure they used the correct fluid in there :D:D

euby 07-19-2002 04:16 PM

liquid,
I started off with the dual feed without the cv's and then switched to the single feed... in the back of the drivers head out the front and then crossed over to the back of the passanger head and out the front to the regulator using AN4 lines. I haven't noticed any performance difference between the two, but I can feel pulses from the injector feedback in the single feed line (if you grab ahold of it) and the return fuel temps are about 50 degrees warmer. With the single feed line I've had to up my fuel pressure to 68lbs where I only had to run about 60lbs with the dual feed. I'm thinking about an accumalator before the return to the tank to help with the split shot feedback. I'm just afraid with the pulses its working the regulator and actually causing a pressure drop or at least flucuations in fuel pressure in the passanger head. I may just go back to the dual feed and put some sort of bleed off valve at the regulator. Either way its better than the "dead head":D

I told you to get a Dodge. :D :D :D

Outrageous 07-19-2002 04:36 PM

2002 F250 PSD pulled the boat at 80 to Sarasota.
Feels like a limo.

Anybody got the scoop on upgrading the computer?

new found respect

for the psd. I'm usually a chevy guy,but i just pulled a 5 ton sea-ray down to LOTO for july 4, man that thing was amazing. I don't usually drive that truck (stole it from my father). But That will be the only time that 26' cruiser will have ever done 100mph:eek: . We ran a steady 80-85mph all the way there and back, and my buddies were trying to keep up in a 318 powered dakota. Every time we stopped to fill up with fuel i'd put about $4 more, and there were just 3 of them ---oh and about $500 worth of booze--but still! I couldn't even feel the boat behind me. 2000 PSD with a 5 speed. I think after the bugs get worked out of the new 6.0 I'll end up ordering one.

delsol 07-21-2002 12:31 PM

Sorry troutly i stand corrected! I just never think of bull low as a gear---but you're right it is a 6 speed, and i think we coming down a hill in southern illinois for the close to 100 mark:D

Oh no --did I just admit to a law dog that i was speeding???:p
