Drive oil bottle
Anybody know where I can find an older style (round) drive resivore bottle?
|
They are pricey from MERC what ain't
I was determined not to pay their price
I found one in a McMaster- Carr book 404-346-7000 This was several year ago Merc's price was around 75 if I recall (complete) I bought the bottle for under 5 bucks Did have to machine a part to work though Just buy the new style and be done with it or go the route I did The machine work was adapting at the bottom of the jug. |
I have tripps, and I don't want to replace all 3.

HERE WE GO
Wide mouth polycarbonate bottles
Rigid and virtually unbreakable, these transparent bottles are also chemical and moisture resistant. The have threaded, black polypropylene cap with Buna-N seal to help prevent leakage. Like I say they have nothing in the bottom in them. I made a fitting and put an o-ring seal in the fitting. Order one and see what you think only 10 bucks. ---capacity------cap size--dia.---height---part #----$$$ 1 oz 30 ml----48.4 mm--2"----2 1/16"-3999t1--$4.41 2.5oz 75 ml---- " --" ----3 1/16---3999t2-- 4.53 5------------------------------2 7/8-3----------------t3--4.85 9------------------------------""""""4 1/4-----------t4---5.26 16----------------------------3 5/8-5 1/4-----------t5---9.03 32----------------------------"""""-8 5/8------------t6---9.76 .5 gal------------------------5"----9 3/8------------t7--11.25 32 oz is probably the one you need, 3999t6 @ $9.76 ht is 8 5/8". McMaster-Carr catalog # 108 pg 1531 upper right hand corner of the page. I'll take my 25% comission:D |
Someone just told me yesterday that you can't get the nice ROUND resivoir bottles by Merc anymore---they only have the smaller square bottles available now. I HATE those little cheap looking square bottles. The guy who was telling me this had seveloped a crack in the base of the round bottle he had and said he could NOT find a round bottle to replace it with. He said Merc doesn't make them anymore. So Mike, you're saying you can get them eh?
|
Mikes correct, while not the original you can get a similar round bottle from http://www.mcmaster.com If you go to their website and type in the part number that Mike gave you in their search column you'll be able to see the selection they have.
|
like I said you will..
have to modify the bottom of the jug to make McMaster's work.
Not a hard job IF you can machine on your own. If not switch over to the new style. If your wallets are deep (mine are not:mad: ) go for the Looking Glass by Imco. Page 32 of Aug. PB Mag. Only $242.50 ea X 3 = |
bottle
the bravo has one that about 2 quarts with brackets that cone with the b-max has a lot of room for expansion and to clear up the foam, they look like the old round one but bigger, goog luck
|
Man, this sucks. My boats not that old ether. Leave it to merc to make you spend more than you need to. It sounds like the round bottle had a problem holding up. I guess it was easier for merc to completly replace the system than fix the existing bottles.
|
Mike, so you're saying you simply took the McMaster bottle, drilled a hole in it, put a fitting in it, and attached the hose from the drive???? It's plastic, why would "machining" be necessary??
|
Madcow, is that part # 69622A12, if it is let me know and I will see what I can do !!
It may have been superseeded but I'll give it a shot |
Spending the night at Sunsation32's house tonight
so I am on his puter.
The reason I machined the bottle was because it wasn't perfectly flat. I was afraid when I attached the fitting to the bottom of the jug it would crack like all of the merc bottles do. It's been too many years ago and I can't remember if I had to machine out an alum. part to put in the bottle. Sorry:rolleyes: brain cells ain't what they use to be. My old boat was a 1988 24 foot Carrera. It didn't have the alarm set up in the bottle. I am pretty sure I machined a part for the bottle. |
If ya didn't figure it out this is....

old post same problem,, leaking reservoirs for my outdrives,, I ordered 2 bottles $12.38 each . total shipped 29.01 anyway I was expecting something close to the original... well I received them today and heres the scoop...
THESE ARE THE SAME BOTTLES ,, the lid was EXACTLY the same I was able to use mine with the vent already installed. When I took apart the merc bottle,,,, the bottom of the bottle had been machined flat in the center inside and out. had a 5/8 hole thru. I have the bottles w/o the low oil sensor ,, so the fitting on the bottom of mine is hex aluminum with an o ring already on it for the seal and just a thin nut goes on the inside of the bottle... Oh the one thing this bottle DOESN'T have,,,,,, the $50 sticker that has an oil level mark....... i'll post an update on how I machine the bottom... |
The newer square ones are fine they snap in holder! If you have no drive leaks they take less room up!The low fluid alarm is a good thing to have my 02 cents
|
Especially when the o ring fall out of the top cap and you didnt notice then you run till the alarm sounds because there is a whole qt of oil in the bilge!!
GLAD i had the ALARM!!! |
I have one you can have. I will be in Toledo on 11/10 if you want to pick it up. Call me on the 10th.
