If I'm not mistaken it is 100% new with the exception of maybe something in the turbo. The engine itself is completely new

The DOHC V8 the 1100,1350 and 1650 are based on are a 557 cu in block that probably has a lot in common with a BBC such as bore spacing etc. The heads are Mercury's, and the exhaust manifolds are tuned phase so they scavenge. Mercury also got around the parasitic losses of superchargers which were significant also. Very Smart and forward thinking of them.
Mercury probably spent a ton on their development, they realized that valvetrain was the weakpoint on 1200+ HP engines with Pushrods, lifters, and rockers all being failure points when you start talking about the kind of cylinder pressures at that power levels. The valves push back, and things bounce around.

How many of these teams can afford $250k per engine?
Is Mercury trying to control the sport or kill the sport?
Even our NASCAR Toyotas are only $125k. The going rate for a NASCAR lease deal is between $3mil & $4.5mil. for 38 races plus testing.

I can't believe that anyone would pay that kind of money for an engine. I understand they need to recoup the investment in development but that is insane.
