Image of the Week: Why Gilbert’s Rules

If you've been on the recently completed Miami Boat Show Poker Run, this killer Jay Nichols photo will speak to you, http://speedonthewater.com/in-the-ne...rts-rules.html.

If you haven't, it will make you want to go next year.

Great cheeseburger, too.

I'll trust you on the hotel.

Unfortunately...., the only place in Key Largo to offer over night dockage. Their food rocks, as does their view and live music.
We don't overnight there because your still a mile/two from Key Largo proper and there's a huge hill/bridge to cross going south. Meaning, no walking or bicycling like we do.

jackie.fpc 02-25-2013 10:59 AM

I guess we can disagree then~

glassdave 02-25-2013 11:09 AM

If your position is that the photo is better because it shows "more boats" then it is "better." But as a photo ... no way. Not only is it out of focus, but the horizon isn't level. And there's no action at all in the channel.

My position? Not even close.

mike tkach 02-25-2013 03:07 PM

boys, lets not argue about who,s picture is better,i like both of them.:party-smiley-004:

Boys and girls, please. Jackie is a girl ... and a friend. If I can't pick on her, who can I pick on?

since we are in the mood to give people a hard time the horizon in Jay's photo is not level either, and the railing is blocking the view of some of the boats, really they both suck as photos but show lots of cool boats! :lolhit:

I just noticed Jay's comment that it was shot one handed at 60mph so i guess Jackie did the same, so I take back my comment, they are both great shots considering the situation.

Jay's horizon is slightly off kilter, for sure, but I gave him a break because of the "Hail Mary" nature of his shot. But yeah, it is a few degrees off.

Having the blue railing of the bridge in the photo was intentional. It's actually a pretty basic element of photo composition to have something in the foreground in a situation where you're trying to not only capture the subject but also the place, in this case a bridge, from where you were shooting it. The bridge is part of the story the photo is telling.

Because Jay is not shy with using Photoshop to enhance color saturation, his photos look much like what I see when I'm wearing Maui Jims or Ray Bans in Florida, which is pretty much whenever I'm outside during the day.

As always, Psorti, you make me laugh. Well played.

ILMORdude 02-25-2013 08:35 PM

Jay hits homeruns with his camera like Bonds did with "the juice"!!!

jackie.fpc 02-26-2013 09:29 AM

yea, mine was with a cell phone. But no bridge... and more boats.

Saw them all in key west, i dont often get stopped in my tracks but that display did it. I also liked the white one with the black running surface, think it had some red in it as well. Great work . . .

jayboat 02-27-2013 09:48 PM

Impressive to say the least.
