Headsets

Just wondering how many cat owners have headsets and use them, or are they just a waist in a sit down boat.?

DirtyJerz 03-08-2013 09:31 PM

I have a set. Magic's do not have a windshield, so at high speeds with the wind in our faces and the engine noise I cant hear the person next to me. The headsets help out a lot!!! :drink:

I have the Rugged Radio system that I used in my 28' Skater. It works great and was easy to install. You need the thick mic muff for open cockpit. We attached the iPhone and VHF. You can talk to each other listen to music take or make a phone call and monitor and use the VHF.

Customer service and support is great. I'm installing the system in my new build. They sent me a custom face plate and bezel to match my gauges.

Ask for Kevin if you call.

I have a David Clark system, and was wondering it I should install it in the MTI, I don't know if I would use them. I didn't when I had the 39 Nortech, one time and took the, system out.

Use mine a lot especially on poker runs. But with twin canopies and dry headers mine is loud with wind noise in the back and engine noise. It may not be very important with the new windshield designs and quieter engines. It is a very nice thing in my boat though. On poker runs it is very nice for my crew to be able to communicate what they are spotting to me. Also really cool to play music through them.

I was teaching my son how to drive during poker runs. It was a night mare because we were screaming. I bought the headset system and it was awesome. Spotter in back could clear us of the really fast boats closing on us.

Just be careful how many you headsets you "have". You may have to listen to someone in the back telling you to slow down or it's too rough:lolhit:

Yes there seems to be a big difference in "marine" and "off road" prices!

Funny thing they both are exposed to the elements.

I just bought a set of Peltor aviation headsets & radios I have not got to use them on the boat yet. After only having my cat out once last year there was a lot of wind noise & now with the blowers whining im not going to be able to hear anything this year. Probably only use them on poker runs & longer trips.

Id like to make a recommendation:

I having a custom 4 man headset made by Tom Frank from http://www.comzilla.com/

Since I have two kids who I might not want to listen sometimes hes setting it up with a separate switch to turn of the rear two headsets (they can still talk to each other) . Its all custom per application

Tom is a great person to work with and I love supporting MADE IN THE USA business.

His prices are also VERY fair.

Heres some correspondence that sold me to go with Tom.

While I know the owner and the guys over at ***** and they are all good guys, we really aren't comparing apples to apples between our system and theirs Our systems are built to customer specifications by hand in small batches here in the US. The **** system you are looking at is a mass produced item from China or Korea.

Now for the justification. Besides being hand built in the USA, our systems are built to out live the vehicles they put in. We have been doing this for 30 plus years and many of our systems have been in use 15 years or more in specific off shore boats and off road trucks without issue. Internally we build our systems with two independent power supplies, where others do not. We hard wire all cabling off the board out of the box where others use plug in cables. Each cable has a connector with 4 solder joints per connector, per side. Adding in the 2 connectors and the 8 solder joints, you increase possible failures by 10 times. We do not use VOX at all. Our systems are live continuous. VOX needs to be adjusted based on the increased noise environment. At idle you set it at one level, at speed another, and so on. If you set it too tight, your first word can be clipped. If that first word is turn or stop, it could be costly. Besides becoming a pointless feature, I primarily mention the VOX topic as you say you want something simple. Simple is what we believe in. Once our intercom is mounted, it has power, cables are run, and headsets are plugged in, you are talking live continuous. Those are just some of the reasons our intercom is set apart from others.

In regard to the headsets, we are all pretty much using the same ones. The only thing I do different from others is use a genuine military grade mic. Others are using copies of such a mic. If after reading this you would like a detailed quote, please let me know. By all means I would love to build you a system, I can say if you do have a system built by us, if it is taken care of, it is likely to provide you with many years of enjoyment.

So here's what we will do. Let's do over the head carbon fiber finish for the front 2 and we will do black over the head in the rear and I will cover the cost difference for the fronts. Also, while we haven't discussed it, I suspect panel mount jacks with stainless steel mounting bezels will be the cleanest application. The stainless bezels are usually $12 per, but I will include them at no additional cost.

SOLD!

I have a Piratecom system in my Comp and it works great.

That said, I never use it.
The canopy provides plenty of wind protection that the driver & navigator can talk at normal volume.
No headphones allows me to hear my engines and other sounds (boats) around me.
