Used boat sales
 

I was wondering what experience you all had with used boat sales this year. Mines for sale and I would like to hear if you guys see it down, up, or the same...

:D Actually, outstanding!! I sold my old boat.....to the 1st guy that responded to an add on OSO the 1st day it was posted. Of course, there was some negotiations but still.....sold to 1st responder on the 1st day the add was posted???? Pretty good !!

I also found my new boat on OSO, & went to Arizona to trial it.
This is an excellent source (OSO) to buy or sell.......ya' just gotta be askin' the right price & have the right product to sell......face it, turkeys only sell at Thanksgiving!!;)

In our area, Western NY, used sales are up this year. I am actually short on used inventory. We are looking for brokered boats to sell!
The reason for this, I am finding, is people are staying closer to home after 9/11. Many are first time boaters or people returning to boating. Pool and RV sales are also up here. New boat sales are down.

I hope there will be some good responses to this topic. I'm also very interested in the used boat market. The wife and I are both in total agreeance(sp) that we are in dire need of a bigger boat. We are doing some financial shuffling and will hopefully be ready to buy this fall or winter at the latest.

I bought a used 35 back in March and sold my 28 in April...so I guess you could say that used boat sales have been pretty good where I have been concerned.

At the marina where I keep my boat, there are a few used boats for sale but only one has been sold.

On TraderOnline, I still see alot of the same Cigarettes that have been for sale for a while, but they are higher priced...the good deals usually get snatched up pretty quickly while the higher priced boats seem to take more time to sell. I think it is a reflection on the obvious state of the economy where only those with considerable wealth or income are willing to take the chance and buy the 100-500k boat...while people like me just wait for the deals to come along...

I bought a Baja 25 Outlaw at the end of last summer, sold it this spring, then bought a 24 Skater a month and a half ago.

The Baja was found on Traderonline at an awesome price. I sold it cheaper than lesser equipped 25 Outlaws. Basically, I bought it right, then sold it to another guy right. He drove 13+ hours one way to buy my boat. That boat sold in less than a month.

I always planned on buying a 24-28 Skater if the right deal came across. I found mine on Traderonline an hour after the guy posted the ad. I called him the minute I read the ad, took the next day off from work and drove 600 miles one way that evening to buy it.

There are so many different boats in all price catagories that it makes such a buyer's market. As you can see, people will go out of their way for a good deal. I will always wait around for the deal, and traveling across the US doesn't bother me if the deal is that good.

The majority of boats being sold here are on the lower end of the scale. Example- I have a 99 280 Velocity with low hours that can be bought for $49,000! Doesn't sell, nothing wrong with the boat. It just needs a trailer, but that's not a big deal. The price is the lowest in the country, and it's fresh water only. What's up with this?

!That is the price range my Baja was in. I would have looked at your Velocity if it were around at the time I bought the Baja. There are a ton of boats in that price range. Without a trailer is somewhat of a hassle to some people. You are sort of cutting out the impulse buyer if they can't tow it home that day.

I know Dave P., I'm an NJPPC member also, did you mean my boat or the velocity. Unfortunately, dealers offer sub-value for boats and I priced mine very aggressively to move it.

$49 not aggressive for a 99 280 Velocity? Low hours, freshwater? Wow!

I would say high end boats.....$125,000.00 and more....very slow.......but anything under that seems to be moving. My CAT is still for sale at 179,000.............no lookers or even prop spinners
But friends are selling and buying boats all the time. Guess I should should deal with the cheap boats..:)

glad to hear sales are good, I'm getting ready to move up and will be putting my H2X up for sale, thanks for the info.

I'd like to get 22k with trailer, but would consider something serious in that ball park. There are pics in my gallery also and I can email you more details if you like.

Here's a question ... when you listed your boat ... how much higher than your bottom line did you list it? If bottom, bottom price was say $50K ... did you list it for $55K, $60K, $65K ... or what????

And buyers, what are your general assumptions when when you see a boat listed? Do you assume the seller will take 20% less than the listed price ... or what???

That's my problem, I bought my boat 2 years ago for 30K, blew a motor and put a 97 in last year for 6K, added steering and other junk, another 3-4K, I'm asking 35K, so I think it's a fair deal. Not looking to make money, just step up.

Mine is also for sale... had one person interested in it, but have not heard from him again... I think the price is right also to sell it.. I have a 2001 24' PowerQuest.... asking 42,000 with trailer. Nothing wrong with it... just stepping up in size..

ive had mine for sale for 9 months now.only one guy has even looked at it.i guess its to old , obscure , or im asking to much.at this point ide consider any offer.turned it over to a broker recently.no help.if anyone wants a fast boat (cheap at this point) let me know.twin 502's/bravo ones.

I tell ya, I am always concerned about resale when I buy a boat. I knew my scarab would be a tough sell because of the price. But never imagined this.
I can afford a heck-of-a lot more but next time I will look older and in the 30 - 50k range because I like to switch boats every year or two. Seems they always sell. But then find a nice one????

Shooter, I sold my 1994 290 Powerquest this spring using only the OSO classifieds. I was asking $45,000 and got $38,000. I was happy, most were only giving me $32,000-$33,000 on trade. It is loaded and had 400 hours on it. I am not sure add ons help that much and its very important for the buyer to see the boat if you want any kind of premium.

jb, I am also concerned about resale, but with something like a boat, its a crap shoot at best. It's a purely luxury item that tends to depreciate faster when the economy is bad. The high end stuff is where I think it really gets risky. Not a real big market for $200,000+ boats period, let alone a used one. A lot of people in this catagory want to make a statement and finding a used boat that makes "their" statement makes selling them used even tougher.
