Cleaning the outside of the boat
so I started to wash the boat, I used a west marine orange boat wash, it didn't clean ****. what products are you using on the outside of your boat. i'm trying to clean:
1) waterline marks 2) some yellowing of the bottom 3) black exhaust at the rear of the boat if I use a buffer, would a rubbing compound clean it ? any suggestions on make of compound ? any good wax recommendations? |
I was told "on off" works wonders, its abrasive but cleans, just gotta rewax after your done! Ive bought some just havent used it yet! My buddy uses on his all the time......

Be careful with on/off. Very toxic, will damage trailer with many uses. It is acid, be careful of fumes too.
|
BioKleen Hull Cleaner works on all that stuff!
|
toilet bowl cleaner
|
River bottom brown on the hull and black exhaust need much more than soap. I used a diluted mix of on/off and then re-waxed after. If I waxed the hull twice a year the stains wiped right off for a few months.
|
Simple Green on the transom. Use a "drenched with water" rag so the exhaust doesn't just streak!
|
Buff with 3m marine cleaner wax, works very well! I know a few marina's that swear by it. Worked great the times I have used it.

1) waterline marks - straight vinegar or hull cleaner
2) some yellowing of the bottom - The Works toilet cleaner (cut 50/50 with water) 3) black exhaust at the rear of the boat - Simple Green |
Does the Simple Green take the wax off too?
Saw a post from a few years back that recommended "Swipes". Said the transom soot wiped off easily and it didn't remove the wax. Not sure if it is still around or not. |
roll off works well for general cleaning.
|
Roll Off (available in a spray and gallon size)for black marks, and soot. Power One from Fountain of Youth for the yellow discoloring at the water line. Power One works like the acid based products (very fast, spay on wait, rinse off) however it doesn't burn like an acid based product. TO clean water spots off chrome, stainless, xhaust tips, etc vinegar.
|
Some yellowing Power One will not touch. The yellowing/buildup I get on my hull on my local lake just laughs at Power One. Works takes it right off.

Have to be careful and fast as it will turn your boat blue if not done quickly. but at $1.38 from walmart it is the BOMB for yellowing and bottom scum. works great on rusty fittings as well! |
