350hp-6.2/bravo and whipple, good combo?

I'm considering a 21 ft Checkmate with a 2006 Merc 350hp/6.2/ Bravo one set up and a whipple on it. This is suppose to result in 450hp and 80+ mph. Boat only has 60 hours total on it.

Bash on Checkmate if you must, I like the brand. But if you could help with info on the power combo please.
My intial thought is the Bravo should stand up to this fairly well.
How well do those motors like whipple chargers on top of them. I will ask who did the install, as I'm sure that can make all the difference. Can anyone tell me who does this right and what it takes to do it right or if it is just a bad idea?

Thanks
Rob

Send a PM to OSO member 'Haxbyspeed' . He had Whipples on a twin 6.2's for a customer. I'd like to have them on my 6.2's, only thing holds me back is the Hypereutectic pistons. Rest of the engine is pretty stout. Also, the ECM555 needs to be re-mapped that only Dustin Whipple is authorized to do. You should have at least the Bravo 1X for 450HP and be gentle on take offs.

Altamate, check out my friend's 28 Checkmate here. He's an engine builder, built the single 400cu smallblock for this build. Bought the boat brand new from Checkmate sans engine and drive. You can pin the throttle at 6000 rpm all day long. http://youtu.be/_aOCPl2VxHM

I had two 6.2 with whipples and they lasted way longer then they should have. We had another set of motors that were not done in time so I put the 6.2's in as temp motors with the whipples. Then figured in the winter I would swap them out. Well they took a beating and lasted for two whole seasons. I blew one up at desert storm because when I adjusted my rocker arms I forgot to tighten a poly lock. So it kicked the rocker and shut down the cylinder. Then it detonated another cylinder and blew up but I was at wot and 6k when this happened so its expected. Was not the motors fault.

Bottom Line is that it's a great combo if set up right which mine was. They made good power and took a beating.

I hear others say they have problems but you only hear about the problems.

I would do them again. We did put bigger pan for more oil and put arp studs on the crank caps. But the rods and pistons were stock.

Cat&Mice, did you have your ECM recalibrated? What was your WOT , drive ratio and prop size?

Yes my ECM had a custom calibration by Dustin. He did the initial work on his dyno and then fine tuning in the boat. So yes I was lucky to have the expert doing my set up. I can imagine things going wrong if I had someone that didn't know what they were doing.

At that time I had 1:35 gears and 36 bravo. When I blew the motor and put the 407" SBC in I went to 1:24 and had 34 or 35 5 blades ( I can't remember exactly what I had). But let's not get side tracked. LOL

Thanks. I got the Bravo1X drives with 1.65 ratios and labbed, re-tuned B1 26P. Max rpm is at 5000 ,a few hundred shy of the rev limiter. Turning 36P Bravos with 1:35 ratio is pretty impressive.
To get those numbers with tuning by Dustin is amazing.

It was a 138 mph twin cat with very high x. With the bigger motors it went 150mph

The pic in my avatar is of the 406" SBC after we took out the 6.2
