Whats a better ride

Currently looking at two boats. 28 cigarette and a 27 fountain. Which would have a better ride in the chop of lake st clair and the detroit river?

I would think the Cigarette, as the cig is a larger / longer running surface than the Fountian....you loose "weted surface" length because of the beak and integrated swim platform

just my opinion

i agree . though the 27 fountain is an awesome boat too ....

I would say the Cigarette would do better in the rough but the Fountain would be faster and more efficient with the same power.

A friend of mine had a 27 Fountain years ago... I had a twin engine 28 Pantera at the time... The Pantera would outrun the Fountain easily, especially if there was anything more than a 1' bump.. Every time we went out he had a lot of broken parts to fix... The boat just fell apart when he ran it hard enough to try to keep up.
the old Cig may not run as fast, but it will likely ride better... That Fountain is awful small in the water... There are a lot of other boats to choose from in my opinion.

Agree that 27 is small on the water and cockpit room. Probably a lot more up to date though

I would call a 27 Foutain the same as a Baja 24OL in size. Had one sitting next to my 280 one time, there was a huge difference in size.

The 27 Fountain was really never intended to be a offshore big water boat. They offered 38's, 42's, and 47's for that. The 28 Cig, was more offshore oriented, and will provide a better ride if running offshore, great lakes, ocean, etc.

A better comparison would be the 29' Fountain vs the 28 Cig. Both cool boats, but as it was said, in that size range, so much to pick from. Most importantly, if they are older boats, make sure the hull, stringers, and transom's aren't rotted. Fountain and Cigs are not exempt from this issue.

I will say the Cig will ride better in rough, the 28 Cig is a great big water boat for it's size... not fast but solid as a rock

The cig will ride better in rough stuff for sure. The fountain is really only a 24-25 foot boat with a single. I would assume the cig has twins.

Cig for sure will ride better.

I've had three 28 Cigarettes over the years..
Two I raced in APBA back in the day.
They are great boats.
Only downside I saw was not much free board.
In BIG water they are too short & have a tendency to stuff .I can attest to that
Very tight in the engine compartment even with small blocks.

I had a 28' Cig, great boat and like has been said low freeboard and just a bit short in bigger ocean swells. It's a great boat in the ocean on a fair day and in the NJ bay's it can never get too rough for that boat it eats them up!

Lake st clair when it gets snotty can be rougher than the ocean in Point Pleasant N.J. Been there done that.

If you want to be comfortable in the rough waters of the lakes than get a bigger boat than 28 feet. Just my 2 cents.

Looks like I will be getting the cig. I would go bigger, but I want to be able to hit the inland lakes close to my home during the week so the kids can swim. Anything bigger and the ramps may be a problem.

Get a 28 skater......
Great ruff water boat
Faster
Less to maintain
Holds value better

Indy 05-21-2013 06:26 AM

The Cig is all hull, no comparison...the better ride without question.

MrSneakAttack 05-21-2013 06:38 AM

both will be rough but the cig will ride the better of the two

Griff 05-21-2013 12:12 PM

There are a lot of other good choices out there in the 28' range as well.
Sunsation
Pantera
PowerQuest
