JGB , I bet that big Cig weighs more then that ! I had a 1985 402 Formula with 370's and Kamma drives that weighed 10500 dry and 13000 with fuel pluss the trailer was 5000#. I would think that would weigh over 2000 more .
I haven't herd anything yet about my friends adventure to the CIg . I'll let you know .

While looking at repowering my gas powered 40' scarab, I looked into the diesel's a bit. Basically, what i ended up thinking was they were all quite a bit heavier- because of motorweight and lay up in the older boats. Which really hurt their top end performance. I haven't heard of too many of these big oil burners that get much past the 50 mph mark, a guy here has a 50' scarab meteor, runs about 40 mph, with 250 hp ford diesels. By the time I added the numbers of putting new/ good used diesels in---I could have bought a LOT of gas. What Boot said is exactly true about the 3208's.
The 420 Yanmars are nice motors, and seem to work well inthe newer big boats, but to replace with them--- you might want to move up a couple of years and get a boat with them already. It might not be that much different in price at the end of the project. Just hindsight talking here But really, good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks guys, i apreciate all of your input. It is just an idea i have had, first with the aronow 39, now with the cig 41. I am so glad i am not so impulsive as to make any hasty moves. I guess you could say i have an affinity for super heavy turtles. LOL

I actually have a 1986 41' Cigarette and here are the basics

Fuel 330 Gal
Speed 52 wot 2800 rpm
Cruise 42-45 2350-2450 rpm

Fuel Consumption:
21 gph/side wot
16 gph/side cruise 80-85% wot

In the Mid 80's the 3208 had one of the best hp to weight ratios. Now the Yanmar 420's should fit the bill. There is a company on the east coast who specializes in repowers with yanmars. The co. was brokering a very nice top gun and when looking at the web site had lots if info on them. As far a the 3208s being "throw away" its all relative. The service manual suggest you don't even adjust the valve lash until 19000 gal of fuel or 2000 hours and scheduled PM rebuilds at 30000 gal 3000 hours. At 950 hours am happy w the motors and the boat. Other diesel equipment I own include a Truck(Isuzu) and a tug (Detroit Diesel). I not a mechanic but the basics are pretty simple. hi john, thanks for the info. I had contacted bill a few days ago via email. Unfortunately, I would need to sell my boat in order to be in the position to do something unless, of course you were willing to trade? From my conversation with bill the latter option out of the question. I did however tell bill that if it hasn't sold in a few months to let me know and if i have sold my boat by then i might be ready to take a look at doing a deal. Who knows? Maybe you might be interested in a trade by then?
